Mountain Hawks Drop Home Contest With Saint Joseph’s, 15-8

2/27/2021 10:06:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Saint Joseph's staged a 6-0 first-half run, which proved too much to overcome as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 final to visiting Saint Joseph's on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Trailing 8-2, the closest the Mountain Hawks would come was 8-4 and 9-5, but the Hawks began the second half with three straight goals to create separation.

"Saint Joe's played really hard tonight and went to the cage really hard," said Lehigh associate head coach Sammy Cermack. "Our defense made a lot of improvements from our first game. I think offensively, we could have been a little bit more composed. Their goalie played a great game."

Senior Hannah Cermack led Lehigh's offense with four points via a career-high tying four assists. Graduate student Sodnra Dickey filled up the stat sheet with three goals, four groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Senior Cecily Redfern also scored twice.
Sophomore Gabby Schneider assisted Lehigh's first goal and scored the second, but the Mountain Hawks then went nearly 12 minutes without a goal and in that time, Saint Joseph's reeled off six straight. Consecutive goals from Redfern and Dickey in the span of 18 seconds got Lehigh within 8-4 with 13:17 remaining in the first. With 1:14 on the clock, Dickey scored her third to pull the Mountain Hawks within 9-5 at the half.
The Hawks scored the first three of the second to open a 12-5 advantage. A second-half highlight was sophomore Annie McCarthy, who scored her first-career goal at the 20:05 mark to pull within 12-6, but that's as close as Lehigh would come.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 36-30 edge in shots and 18-15 advantage in groundballs. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 13-12 edge in draw controls.

Lehigh will return to action next Saturday when it travels to La Salle for a 4 p.m. showdown against the Explorers.
