Lehigh Enjoys Success, Gains Valuable Experience at Head of the Housatonic
10/9/2021 9:08:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
SHELTON, Conn. – The Lehigh rowing team competed in its second fall race Saturday, enjoying success amidst a strong field of teams at the Head of the Housatonic. The Mountain Hawks were led by their Varsity Eights, as the men came in sixth while the women placed seventh.
Â
"It was great to be at a fall regatta again," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We haven't been able to do this in a long time. I think it really adds to the freshmen novice experience, in terms of having that first opportunity to run down a race course next to powerhouse teams that you always hear about such as Yale and Brown. The University of Washington was here. Army was here, Boston University. It was really awesome to have our athletes line up against [such strong crews] this early in the season."
Â
Lehigh's first entry was in the Women's Eights as the Mountain Hawks' Varsity Eight came in seventh out of 25 crews with a time of 16:02.0. Also competing was Lehigh's "B" crew (who finished in 17:27.2) and its "C" crew (who finished in 19:03.4). Meanwhile, the Mountain Hawks' Men's Varsity Eight came in sixth overall out of 20 crews in the Men's Eights. Lehigh had a "B" boat finish in 17:13.9, good for 14th.
Â
"The Varsity Eights were probably the best performers of the day," said Conley. "They just had a 'taking it to the next level' kind of race and I liked seeing that from our top crews because it makes everybody want to strive to be in those boats. That just makes us all a whole lot better."
Â
The Mountain Hawks' other entries on Saturday were in the Women's and Men's Fours. Lehigh finished eighth on the women's side out of 13 crews (with a time of 18:37.7) while on the men's side, the Mountain Hawks placed 10th out of 15 crews (with a time of 18:21.8).
Â
"I'm excited about where the team is going," said Conley. "What I saw today showed a level of desire that I've been hoping to see this year. With the team's goals being very lofty to win the Patriot League Championship and the MARC (Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference), trying to do well here was very critical and I think we did that."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action later this month, on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia
Â
"The more important piece now is the next couple weeks of training before our next race and seeing if we can widen the gaps to the crews behind us and close the gaps to the crews ahead of us," said Conley. "If we can do that, then we're definitely heading in the right direction."
