Mountain Hawks Win Three Medals, Including Two Golds at Head of the Schuylkill
10/30/2021 8:41:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – Racing in one of the nation's top regattas, the Lehigh rowing team made its presence felt in a big way, as two Mountain Hawk crews captured gold while another won bronze in quite possibly the program's strongest-ever showing at the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday. The Women's Championship Fours and Women's Frosh/Novice Eight were both victorious while the Women's Championships Eights finished third, and multiple other boats came in the top 10.
Â
"We had an outstanding day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I don't know the last time Lehigh has had had such an outstanding performance at the Head of the Schuylkill, if ever. It's amazing to see all the hard work the athletes have put in pay off."
Â
Lehigh's day began with the Men's Frosh/Novice Fours placing seventh out of 26 crews with a time of 15:30.656. The Women's Frosh/Novice Fours came in 12th (18:17.683). Next was the Women's Championship Fours, which finished first out of a large field of 40 crews, posting a time of 13:47.584.
Â
"The Women's Championship Fours was made up of our four women's captains and Kendall Riskevich in the coxswain seat," said Conley. "It's great when your captains can be the leaders to lead the way and be the first ones to touch that gold medal on the day. I think it just breeds success; people want to be part of it and they rise to the occasion. When leaders do that, it's awesome for the team, program and those individuals at the same time."
Â
"They raced right after the Women's Championship Fours and they felt that addiction to wanting to win and went out and performed in their own way," said Conley. "They probably surprised themselves a little bit. It's great to see the future of our program wanting to work that hard and achieve success."
Â
Rounding out the day was the Men's Club/Championship Eights, finishing 20th (12:12.210), and Women's Club/Championship Eights coming in 24th (14:23.238). The final crew was the Women's Championship Eights, and the Mountain Hawks made it memorable, coming in third with a time of 12:33.015.
Â
"On the men's side, we had a couple top 10 finishes there," said Conley. "That's also due to the work they're doing. I think they just need a little bit more time and more development and they'll be right there winning some medals in the near future."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will look to build from the great performance when they return to the water two weekends from now on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Frostbite Regatta in West Windsor, N.J.
