Mountain Hawks Return to the Water Saturday at Head of the Schuylkill

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a pair of races to begin the fall season in early October, the Lehigh rowing team will return to the water on Saturday when it competes in the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks were in action at the Head of the Housatonic in Shelton, Connecticut, as Lehigh was led by its Varsity Eights – with the men placing sixth overall and women seventh amidst a competitive field.
Â
"We have really gotten after the training the last couple weeks with a lot more mileage and some testing to see our improvements from earlier in the year," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Last weekend, the team participated in our annual Class Day Regatta as well where each class raced against each other. I think this brought a little level of fun for the team while also bringing the competitiveness towards it as well. We are in midterms right now, so it has been a bit more stressful, but the team is managing it."
Â
Lehigh rowing regularly competes in the Head of Schuylkill, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, but it has been a few years, so the Mountain Hawks are eager to return.
Â
"The Head of the Schuylkill is usually the next biggest event in rowing behind the Head of the Charles," said Conley. "We have not had the opportunity to go the past couple years, so it's exciting for us to return and know the level of competition is going to be strong this year, and see how we do."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will have a number of entries, including in the Women's and Men's Frosh/Novice Fours, Frosh/Novice Eights and Club Eights. The women will also have an entry in the Championship Eights. The first Lehigh boat is slated to race at 9:40 a.m. (Men's Frosh/Novice Fours), with the last set for 3:50 p.m. (Women's Championship Eights).
Â
"I am looking to see how we compare to teams we haven't seen yet and to see if we have extended or closed any time gaps with teams we have already raced earlier," said Conley. "The team has definitely gotten some great work in the past few weeks with seeing our novices become more comfortable with the rowing stroke and the team learning some of the newer technical pieces we have been working on this year."
Â
Following the Head of the Schuylkill, the Mountain Hawks will round out the fall schedule on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Frostbite Regatta and Sunday, Nov. 14 at the NYRA Invitational. In the fall, learning, growing and developing is always the biggest focus, and that's exactly what the Mountain Hawks have been doing.
Â
"From the start of the season to the first race and through the second race, we definitely showed a good amount of development," said Conley. "These last few weeks, the first-years and novices have really learned a great deal and are fitting in better to any of the boats they hop into."
