Lehigh opens season with eighth straight victory over Loyola

Prekop paces Mountain Hawks with three first place finishes, two for Martin and Foley

BALTIMORE – The 2021-22 season started off with a bang for the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team, defeating Loyola Maryland, 169-131 to open the new campaign with a 1-0 record. The Mountain Hawks (1-0, 1-0 PL) came away with 11 first place finishes in individual events including three event victories for junior Danielle Prekop and two each for freshman Natalie Martin and fifth year senior Ann Foley.
 
The first event of the day was the 200-yard medley relay, a second place finish for Lehigh behind a strong swim from the team of Hallie Wilson, Prekop, Sarah Hardy and Noel Fresa finishing with a time of 1:47.45, just .03 away from taking first.
 
Martin came away with the Mountain Hawks' first victory of the day in the 1000 free with a dominant time of 10:41.05. Julia Stevens finished in third place at 10:54.85.
 
Sarah Manthorp picked up another victory and nine points for Lehigh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.05, while Hallie Wilson and Willa Werwaiss went 2-3 in the 100 back event.
 
The Mountain Hawks got a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke, led by the first of three first place finishes for Prekop at 1:07.70. Liz Olszewski finished second at 1:09.71 and Kelsey Thompson picked up a solid third place finish at 1:10.44. Prekop also had a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.20) in addition to the 200 individual medley.
 
Julia Stevens found success with a first place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:07.29), just .50 from second place Molly David from Loyola.
 
In her first individual event of the day, it was Ann Foley that finished first in the 50 freestyle at 24.01, inching just ahead of Noel Fresa (24.30) in second position. She also finished first in the 100 freestyle at 51.51 ahead of Fresa once again (53.17).
 
Switching gears over to the diving board, freshman Sarah Gill got a second-place showing in the three-meter dive with a score of 230.92 while Emma Camp finished fourth at 206.40. Gill was the top finisher in the one-meter dive with her high score of 243.07 later in the day.
 
Natalie Martin's second first place finish came in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:17.06. Stevens came in third at 5:18.87.
 
Sarah Hardy finished first in the 100 butterfly at 57.54 and the day finished with a second place finish for the 200 freestyle relay team of Fresa, Jordan MacDonald, Grace Rogowski and Foley (1:37.56).
 
The victory propels Lehigh to 8-0 all-time against Loyola Maryland and 1-0 to start the season for the second consecutive season.
 
The Mountain Hawks have their home opener next weekend at Jacobs Pool, taking on West Chester Friday at 5 p.m. and Rider Saturday at 1 p.m.
