TAMPA, Fla. – The Lehigh women's tennis team kicked off its spring break tennis schedule down in Tampa on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks dropped a contest to the USF Bulls, 7-0. The loss marked the third straight for the Brown and White.
Facing the host school, the Mountain Hawks began play by dropping the doubles point. Things were competitive for the doubles point, as two of the three matches came close to a tiebreaker. Lehigh's top team of Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez picked up a win over the Bulls' top tandem, 6-4. The Brown and White couldn't notch another win for the point, as Casey Zhong and Anshika Singh suffered a close defeat at the No. 3 spot, 7-5.
After USF obtained the doubles point, Lehigh couldn't manage to secure any wins during the singles portion of play. Despite not managing to claim a win, the Mountain Hawks scrapped their way to close matches. At the No. 1 spot, Can dropped a three-setter to the top player for USF, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Then at the No. 2 spot, Gonzalez also suffered a tough defeat in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
The four other players in singles all lost in straight sets, as the freshman Junmoke James suffered a defeat at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-4, while Zhong in the No. 4 spot lost, 6-1, 6-2.
Up next, Lehigh will look to snap its three-game skid with a match against St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow. Also, the Mountain Hawks scheduled a match with Emory University on Wednesday, March 11 at 9:00 a.m. Lehigh added another contest after its scheduled contest against Wesleyan was cancelled.
