Bats stay alive in Lehigh's 11-6 win at NC A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the second game in a row, Lehigh's offense generated 17 hits and for the second weekend in a row, the Mountain Hawks captured a series victory, as Lehigh picked up an 11-6 win over North Carolina A&T Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
The win is Lehigh's second consecutive, improving to 5-8 on the young season. The win also marks No. 499 in the career of head coach Sean Leary, who will go for his 500th career win Sunday against the Aggies in the series finale.
The first inning of the day was eventful for the Mountain Hawks, scoring six runs early to take a 6-0 lead.
Casey Rother opened the first inning by singling through the left side, scoring Gerard Sweeney to take a 1-0 lead. Zack Miles then singled up the middle, scoring Jake Kochmansky to add to the lead, up 2-0. A Joe Gorla single up the middle brought Rother in to score, improving the lead to 3-0. With two runners on base, Matt Hand reach on a fielding error by the Aggie left fielder, scoring both Gorla and Miles to give the Mountain Hawks a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the second inning, Sweeney picked up his first home run of the season, a solo shot to put Lehigh up 6-0 after two innings.
The Mountain Hawks added two to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning off a Casey Rother RBI single and a Zack Miles walk with the bases loaded to take an 8-1 lead.
With an 8-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, it was Adam Retzbach who started the Lehigh push once again with an RBI double to right center field, scoring Rother to take a 9-2 lead. The hit extended the freshman Retzbach's hitting streak to eight straight games.
Two more runs were added on a Miles double down the left field line, scoring Retzbach to give Lehigh a 10-2 cushion before Hand singled to center field, scoring Miles, upping the lead to 11-2.
With junior righty Matt Svanson on the bump for Lehigh, NC A&T began their rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four unanswered runs to come within five, trailing 11-6 heading into the ninth.
Freshman Will Grisack shut the door in the bottom of the ninth inning to come out of the day with another road victory for the Mountain Hawks.
A pair of players finished with three hits on the afternoon, led by Sweeney who went 3-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Rother went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. Five Mountain Hawks had two hits, with Kochmansky, Miles, Gorla, Hand and Tony Gallo in that category.
Miles finished the afternoon going 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, three RBIs and a walk.
Svanson (2-1) earned his second win of the 2020 campaign despite allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work. Grisack went 1.1 scoreless frames, with two hits given up and two strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks conclude the weekend series with NC A&T Sunday at 1 p.m.
