Rettig's start highlights Lehigh's setback at NC A&T in series finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sunday's series finale didn't exactly go as planned for the Lehigh baseball team, as the Mountain Hawks were defeated by North Carolina A&T, 1-0 at War Memorial Field. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Lehigh after taking the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday.

Hitting was scarce for Lehigh on Sunday, managing just one hit against Aggie pitching, but the Mountain Hawks got a dominant effort out of sophomore left-hander Luke Rettig and terrific relief from freshman Ryan Deom.

Rettig was excellent once again for Lehigh, throwing seven scoreless innings, scattering just four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Deom went 1.2 innings allowing just one hit and an unearned run with a walk.

NC A&T had just five hits on the day with the big one coming in the bottom of the ninth on a leadoff single. With two outs in the inning, the Aggies walked off on a throwing error by Lehigh, scoring the runner over from third base to get the victory.

Lehigh's lone hit was off the bat of freshman designated hitter Adam Retzbach, who went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. The hit extends Retzbach's hitting streak to a team-high nine straight games.

With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-9 after the first 14 games of the campaign.

Lehigh turns its attention to Fairleigh Dickinson on the road Tuesday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on NEC Front Row. A win over the Knights would be the 500th in the career of Lehigh head coach Sean Leary.
