Mountain Hawks drop back-and-forth affair at FDU

3/10/2020 4:14:00 PM | Baseball

TEANECK, N.J. — Starting pitching once again ruled the day, but the Lehigh baseball team couldn't overcome a three-run bottom of the eighth inning to the opposition, falling to Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-4 on the road Tuesday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. With the defeat, the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-10 on the young season.

Junior left-hander Cameron Van Hoorebeke had a strong start on the mound against the Knights, allowing just one earned run over six innings of work with six hits allowed, seven strikeouts and a walk. He was pulled after 83 pitches in the seventh inning in favor of fellow lefty Matt Stamford.

FDU got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Nate Brodsky doubled to right center field, bringing in a run to score.

The Mountain Hawks tied the ballgame up in the top of the second inning on a Matt Hand single through the left side, scoring Adam Retzbach, but got the go-ahead run in the top of the third inning on a Casey Rother homer to right center field, his second of the season. That gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
FDU took the lead again in the third inning after a Lehigh throwing error scored a run to tie and Kyle Huber singled to right field to propel FDU on top, 3-2.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the sixth and seventh innings when Tyler Schreiner grounded out to third base, but scored Casey Rother to tie the game up at 3. The Knights took the lead back in the seventh on another Lehigh throwing error, taking a 4-3 lead.

Tony Gallo hit his first home run of the 2020 campaign on a 1-2 pitch in the eighth inning to tie the game at 4-4.
With freshman right-hander Will Grisack on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning, FDU reeled off three consecutive RBI-doubles, holding on for the 7-4 win over the Mountain Hawks.

Rother led the way for Lehigh by going 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Gallo also went 2-for-4 with his home run, adding a run and an RBI. Matt Hand also had a two-hit day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In relief, Stamford (1-1) was charged with the loss, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with a strikeout.

The Mountain Hawks next take on Mount St. Mary's on the road for a single game on Friday before returning home to J. David Walker Field to host the Mountaineers with a doubleheader Saturday and single game on Sunday.
