Lehigh looks for first Patriot League Championship game appearance since 2014-15
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For the second straight season, the Lehigh women's basketball team will be playing in the Patriot League semifinals, this time on the road at Boston University with a 6 p.m. tip-off. The Mountain Hawks took care of business Monday night at Colgate, getting the 69-62 victory to oust the Raiders from the Patriot League Tournament in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.
Lehigh improved to 6-2 all-time against Colgate with the win and are now 25-26 in the tournament. Thursday night's matchup will mark the first-ever game with Boston U. in the tournament, as the Terriers are in their first Patriot League semifinal in program history.
The Mountain Hawks played tight defense in the win over the Raiders on Monday night, with four players scoring in double-figures. Sophomore Emma Grothaus had yet another big night with a team-high 18 points while 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Megan Walker finished with 15 points, Mary Clougherty had 11 and Cameryn Benz added 10 with 10 rebounds for her team-high seventh double-double of the season.
For Lehigh, a big key in the semifinal against BU will be senior guard, Second Team All-Patriot League selection Camryn Buhr, who missed the Feb. 26 edition of the game due to injury. Buhr has since played the team's last three games and will be available once again on Thursday. The Mountain Hawks fell by one point to the Terriers on last-second free throws with 0.8 seconds on the clock. Lehigh was just 5-of-15 from the foul line in the defeat.
A win over Boston University would send Lehigh to the Patriot League Championship for the first time since 2014-15 and for the fifth time in program history. The Mountain Hawks are in search of their fourth league title and first since 2009-10, the second of back-to-back championships.
At No. 6, Lehigh is the lowest remaining seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will have to play on the road for the remainder of the schedule. A win over BU would send the Mountain Hawks to the winner between Bucknell and Holy Cross for Sunday's Championship Game set for 12 p.m. televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
Boston University is one game away from punching its ticket to the Patriot League Championship game for the first time in program history on Thursday night. The Terriers are already playing in their first semifinal in their seven-year existence in the league.
The last time out, Boston U. took down American at home in the Patriot League quarterfinals, 46-44. Freshman Maren Durant had a stellar outing for the Terriers, scoring 12 points to go along with 15 rebounds in her first career postseason appearance. It was also her third double-double of the season so far.
Riley Childs also cleaned the glass as well with 10 boards as the Terriers out-rebounded the Eagles, 40-22 on the night.
The win on Monday night snapped a six-game postseason losing streak for Boston University, bringing its all-time Patriot League Tournament record to 2-6. The Terriers are looking for their first conference championship victory since 2003, when they defeated Maine, 69-65 in the America East final.
BU is led by freshman Maggie Pina, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year as well as a Second Team All-Patriot League and All-Rookie team selection. Katie Nelson was a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree when the awards were announced on Friday. Joining Pina are Durant and Sydney Johnson on the All-Rookie team, marking the first time in league history where three members of the same team were named to the team.
The Terriers have been a tough out at Case Gym this season, 11-5 on the year and 9-1 against league opponents. BU are winners of 11 of its last 12 games at home.
This will be the 18th meeting all-time between the Mountain Hawks and Terriers. After dropping two straight last season, Lehigh got back in the win column against BU by taking the first matchup of the year back on Jan. 8, by a score of 51-34 at Stabler Arena. The Terriers rebounded at home with a 48-47 win at Case Gym on Feb. 26.
Despite falling behind BU in the all-time series, 8-9, Lehigh has an 8-6 edge in Patriot League games against the Terriers dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Thursday night's game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network and aired live on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM and 94.7 FM in Allentown with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call. Pre-game coverage to begin at 5:45 p.m.
