BETHLEHEM, Pa. — It was a Senior Day to remember, especially for senior guard Paige Galiani, who lit up the scoreboard in her first career start, scoring a career-high 18 points on six 3-pointers to propel the Mountain Hawks over Loyola, 82-64 Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena on Senior Day presented by Lehigh Valley Hotel and Conference Center.
The win clinches a spot for Lehigh in the Patriot League Quarterfinals for a third consecutive season with just one regular season game remaining Wednesday at Colgate. The victory also puts head coach Sue Troyan at career win No. 399 and Patriot League win No. 199 with just one game left.
"I'm just so proud of her [Paige]," said Troyan. "She's just always a player that puts the team in front of her, has never questioned me about her role, about her playing time. It's just the way you'd want to see her go out on Senior Day. She played with a lot of poise, a lot of confidence and it was really awesome to see her knock down those shots."
The first quarter was tight for Lehigh, trailing 14-13 at the first media timeout with 3:51 to play. In that run were three Galiani 3-pointers, as she got off to hot start with nine first quarter points. A Cameryn Benz layup had the Mountain Hawks up by a point heading into the second quarter.
A jumper for Megan Walker, layup for Hannah Hedstrom and a free throw for Emma Grothaus had Lehigh up by six points, 20-14 with 7:08 to play in the second quarter.
Lehigh led by as many as 12 points with 2:56 to go after a 3-pointer for Walker, building the lead to 30-18.
Benz drew a foul and sank two free throws to send Lehigh to the locker room with a 10-point, 37-27 lead.
After Loyola cut the Lehigh lead to five points with 8:07 to play in the third quarter, Lehigh went on a 7-2 run to lead by 10 points heading into the media timeout at the 5:12 mark. The Mountain Hawks extended the lead to 15 points after a 3-pointer for Mary Clougherty, a 49-34 lead with 4:07 to play.
The Greyhounds got the deficit down to 10 points after two made foul shots for Laryn Edwards with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.
Lehigh opened the fourth quarter on a 12-5 run to lead by 18 points, 67-49 with five minutes to play in the final frame. Loyola closed the gap to as little as 15 points with 4:02 remaining, but the Mountain Hawks ended the game on a 13-10 push to come away with the 82-64 victory.
Galiani scored nine of her 18 points in the first quarter including a pair of 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter to get her career-high. Walker added 13 points to cap off her impressive week, going 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond-the-arc. Clougherty added 10 points off the bench with a couple of 3-pointers.
Buhr registered 10 rebounds with seven points and two assists, while Hannah Hedstrom grabbed nine boards, had four points and seven assists to go along with two steals.
"Give a lot of credit to our guards today, they did a really good job of finding open shooters," said Troyan. "I thought we worked the ball well against the zone and it always helps when your perimeter shooters are knocking down three's."
Lehigh's bench out-scored Loyola's, 42-7 while the Mountain Hawks scored 17 points off 15 Greyhound turnovers.
Lehigh shot 40.8 percent (31-for-76) from the field, including 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from beyond, and shot 60 percent (6-for-10) from the charity stripe.
The Mountain Hawks will turn their attention to Colgate on Wednesday night in Hamilton, N.Y. to end the regular season.
