HAMILTON, N.Y. — With a quarterfinal bye already clinched, the Lehigh women's basketball team dominated Colgate on the road in the final regular season game of the 2019-20 season, getting the 86-70 victory over the Raiders at Cotterell Court. The win also gets head coach Sue Troyan her 400th career victory and 200th career Patriot League win. The winningest coach in program history, Troyan became just the second coach in league history to achieve the milestone.
With the victory, the sixth-seeded Mountain Hawks (18-11, 10-8 Patriot) will head right back on the road to take on third-seeded Raiders (19-10, 11-7 Patriot) in Hamilton on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. This will be the third consecutive season Lehigh has started in the quarterfinal round and the second straight tournament the Mountain Hawks are taking on Colgate in their first matchup.
"We talked a lot about wanting to build off of Saturday's win against Loyola," said head coach Sue Troyan. "I thought that was a really good performance overall for us and coming into this game with us seeing them again on Monday, we came in here, played well and played with confidence. We executed everything we wanted to do on both the defensive and offensive ends of the ball."
It was a remarkable night for Lehigh's shooters, as four players scored in double-figures, with three scoring 20 or more points. The Mountain Hawks were led by Mary Clougherty (23), Cameryn Benz (21) and Camryn Buhr (20), while Hannah Hedstrom distributed a season-high 11 assists, one shy of her career-high.
The Mountain Hawks opened the gates with a lead and besides a 6-4 lead for the Raiders with 7:36 left in the first quarter, Lehigh never looked back, leading for the remainder of the game. Lehigh ended the quarter on a 15-8 run, leading 19-14 at the first break of the night.
Lehigh opened the second stanza on a 8-5 run to take a 10-point lead over the Raiders with 6:28 left. Clougherty had the Mountain Hawks back on top by 10 points again with 1:26 left after a 3-pointer that got her to eight points on the evening. Colgate scored the final two baskets of the quarter, trailing by six, 39-33 heading into the locker room at halftime.
It was a strong half shooting the ball, with the Mountain Hawks shooting 45.9 percent (17-for-37) from the field and 50 percent (2-for-4) from the free throw line. The biggest story from the first half was Lehigh's aggressive defense, holding Colgate to just 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from the 3-point line.
Colgate managed to cut the Lehigh lead to three points on two occasions in the third quarter, but it was a Mountain Hawk run to conclude the period that caused things to get out of hand. After the Raiders came within three points at 46-43 with 6:22 to play, Lehigh ended the frame on a 21-10 run, leading 67-53 heading into the fourth. The third quarter ended on a half-court heave at the buzzer for Buhr, who banked in the shot.
Buhr had a strong third quarter, pouring in 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Clougherty and Emma Grothaus each chipped in eight points to boot.
The scoring in the fourth was pretty even between both Lehigh and Colgate, but it was the Mountain Hawks who once again found themselves leading by a pretty wide margin. A Clougherty jump shot with 4:30 to play extended Lehigh's lead to a game-high 25 points, with an 80-55 edge, but a Clougherty 3-pointer got Lehigh's lead up to 26 points with 2:31 to play.
The Raiders ended up closing the game on a 10-0 run, but it didn't matter, as Lehigh held on for the 16-point, 86-70 victory to conclude the 2019-20 regular season heading into the Patriot League Tournament.
With four players scoring in double-figures, two players registered double-doubles, as Benz finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Grothaus scored 16 points to go along with her 13 boards. The sophomore forward also added two blocks to her total and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Clougherty scored 23 of the Lehigh bench's 25 points on the evening, going 9-for-15 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond-the-arc.
As a team, the Mountain Hawks shot 47.7 percent (31-for-65) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from beyond-the-arc. Lehigh had a solid night from the charity stripe, shooting 71.4 percent (15-for-21). The defense held Colgate to 39.1 percent (27-for-69) from the field and just 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from long range.
"Our free throws were one of the ways we needed to get better tonight," said Troyan. "And that's something we will continue to work on. That's going to be a focal point to do this again and it's going to be rebounding the ball, defending well and being able to shoot the ball and make free throws."
As mentioned before, Lehigh will now head back to Hamilton to take on Colgate on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. The winner will play the winner of Navy/American or Boston U. in the semifinal round set for Wednesday, Mar. 11.
Troyan getting her 400th career victory Wednesday night at Colgate was one of the very special moments throughout the year, as she explained how special this particular night was for her.
"I think it's really neat," Troyan said. "I do think it's a reflection of doing this job for a long time, but it's pretty cool to do it at one place. And to say that is one of the more special things about all of it, is that I've had my whole career here at Lehigh and to do it with this group of girls is really special.
"To share that milestone with them is pretty important to me, so I'm really happy they were able to do that and it's a team thing."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Camryn Buhr banks in a half-court buzzer beater to conclude the third quarter with a 14-point lead. The senior up to a team-high 20 points. Watch: https://t.co/qhAZqKfukw. #GoLehigh #PLTop3 #SCTop10 pic.twitter.com/Xdj2Tey1NS
