Lehigh begins quest for fourth title with quarterfinal matchup at Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — This part of the postseason is a familiar area for the Lehigh women's basketball team, about to partake in its third straight quarterfinal round matchup to open the tournament. The opponent, also very familiar, as the Mountain Hawks get set to face Colgate for the second time in five days and for the third time in three weeks. Tip-off from Hamilton is set for 7 p.m. Monday night.
In addition to the team's familiarity with one another in this particular season, the two teams met in the Patriot League Quarterfinals last season, resulting in a 78-68 victory for Lehigh at Stabler Arena.
The Mountain Hawks are arguably playing their best Patriot League basketball of the season in this stretch, winners of two straight games, including an emotional Senior Day win over Loyola at home and then last Wednesday, a dominant 86-70 win at Colgate in the regular season finale, which won head coach Sue Troyan her 400th career game and 200th career Patriot League game.
Now, Lehigh will look to punch its ticket to the semifinal round for the second year in a row, with hopes of competing for its first league crown in 10 years and first trip to the NCAA Tournament since the same season.
Lehigh was led by three players scoring above 20 points against Colgate, with Mary Clougherty leading the way with 23 points, while Cameryn Benz had 21 and Camryn Buhr added 20. Benz and Emma Grothaus both recorded double-doubles with the former adding 11 rebounds and the latter grabbing a career-high 13 boards. Hannah Hedstrom had an elite night distributing the ball with a season-high 11 assists, finishing just a dime shy of her career-high.
The Mountain Hawks were exceptional from the floor in the victory, shooting 47.7 percent (21-for-65) from the floor and 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from beyond-the-arc. Lehigh held the lead for almost the entirety of the contest, letting up for just eight seconds at the beginning of the night.
On Friday, Buhr was named a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, her third straight all-league selection.
Colgate enters the Patriot League Tournament as the third seed, but enters the week, struggling the most, having lost three straight games including most recently an 86-70 home loss to Lehigh in the regular season finale.
Before the loss to Lehigh, Colgate fell to Army West Point on the road and to Bucknell at home on Feb. 26.
The Raiders had four players score in double-figures against the Mountain Hawks last week, with Haley Greer leading the way with 18 points, Tegan Graham had 13 whole Ava Williams and Rachel Thompson each scored 12 points. Thompson, who scored 33 points against Lehigh in February, added just three rebounds to go along with four assists to her total.
Coming off the bench, Holly Lueken grabbed a team-high 10 boards with four points in 21 minutes, while Williams had nine rebounds, going 5-for-10 from the field in 29 minutes.
Colgate got a First Team All-Patriot League selection out of Thompson, who has been excellent throughout the season in her final season in a Raiders uniform. She has averaged 16.9 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game including 4.8 assists and 2.5 steals.
Like Lehigh, Colgate has a significant senior class looking for their first-ever Patriot League title. Thompson, Greer, Graham and Abby Schubiger could potentially play their final games in Hamilton on Monday night.
Colgate is 11-17 all-time in the quarterfinal round of the tournament and 15-27 overall. The Raiders are looking for their first win over Lehigh in the tournament since Mar. 5, 2005, a 65-60 victory at Stabler Arena.
The Lehigh-Colgate matchup dates back to the 1986-87 season with the first matchup resulting in an 82-65 victory for Lehigh on Jan. 3, 1987 in Hamilton.
Lehigh is 43-28 all-time against the Raiders, including 33-25 in Patriot League play.
The Mountain Hawks have won six of their last eight games over the Raiders, splitting the season series between the two teams.
In the Patriot League Tournament, Lehigh is 5-2 all-time against Colgate, never having played before at Cotterell Court.
