BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh Track and Field program lost one of its greats this past week. Bill Donahue, former track and field coach from 1981-1993, passed away last Sunday. Coach Donahue was 82.
"Bill was a highly knowledgeable, devoted, caring, and passionate coach who impacted the lives of the many individuals with whom he worked over his career," said Joe Sterrett, Lehigh's Athletic Director. "He loved his sport, was proud of his Colgate roots, and appreciated the unusual opportunity he had to coach at both Lafayette and Lehigh. He was respectful and respected, and he will be missed by the many individuals with whom he maintained long-time relationships."
Donahue was a servant of the community through the Emrey Track and Field Associations. He was instrumental in providing the Mundy Trophy that is used in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet for both cross country and track and field.
Bill was a long-time supporter of the running community in the Lehigh Valley. Once he finished his coaching duties, he was a stickler for the rules and was supremely versed in procedures as an official.
It's difficult to express my feelings for Coach Donahue. He was my mentor, and as a young coach he helped me in a lot of different ways," said head coach Matt Utesch. "He's a guy who spent his entire life taking care of kids. The track and field world, his family, Lehigh and Lafayette will all miss him immensely."
