
Women's Tennis knocks off Duquesne to earn fifth win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team won its fifth match of year, as the Mountain Hawks (5-2) defeated the Duquesne Dukes on Saturday at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Centr, 6-1. With the win, this year's Lehigh team is the fastest to win give games in the past 15 years.
After getting blanked in its previous match, Lehigh was anxious to get the bad taste of out its mouth. Things started off good for the team, as the Brown and White were able to secure the doubles point after clinching two wins. The top team of Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez recorded a 6-3 win over their opponent, while the freshmen pair at the No. 2 spot took down their opponents by the same score. Ella Imhof and Junmoke James won 6-3.
Having the lead going into singles, Lehigh smelt blood in the water, as they only needed to win three singles matches to pick up the win. Well, the Mountain Hawks won five singles matches. At the top spot, the senior Can won in straight sets against Laurel Shmansky, 7-5, 6-1, and then Casey Zhong also won in straight sets at the No. 5 spot, 7-5, 6-4. IT was Can's fourth win of the year, while Zhong won her sixth match.
What clinched the win for Lehigh was the efforts of the Gonzalez and James. Both players had to battle and win classic three-setters to help lift Lehigh past Duquesne. Gonzalez won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, while the freshman James showed gut after dropping the first set, she responded by taking the next two for the win, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
At the No. 6 spot, Sarah Hua picked up her first win of the season, defeating Priyanka Mitta, 8-4.
Next Friday, the Lehigh women's tennis team will host yet another home match. The Mountain Hawks will host the NJIT Highlanders at 5:00 p.m.
