Mountain Hawks soar high at Monmouth Invitational

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – All season long, the Lehigh women's track and field team has constructed its schedule around the Patriot League Championships. After a brief rest last weekend for the majority of the team after consecutive intense weekends, the Mountain Hawks bursted back onto the scene at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational over the past two days.
 
In a contest that featured over 20 schools, the Brown and White and the Monmouth Hawks went back-and-forth in the two days, trading win after win and top finish after top finish.
 
At the conclusion of the event, Lehigh notched five wins, while obtaining a handful amount of second and third place finishes.
 
All season long, Brooke Schaeffer has proven every weekend that she is a top performer in the Patriot League. This weekend was the same for Schaeffer. The senior leader added another win to her resume. In the 800m, Schaeffer's late surge helped her win the event at 2:10.70. In the high jump, Jordan Otto notched a win of her own. Looking to sustain success heading into the PLC in two weeks, Otto smashed a jump of 1.65m to win.
 
The distance group for the women's track and field team erupted success this weekend. Led by assistant track and field coach and head women's cross country coach, Debbie Utesch, the women recorded multiple top performances that included wins and top finishes.
 
Jade Sessions, Nicole Abbondandelo and Susie Poore all registered wins in their respective events. Sessions took first in the 1000m (2:58.35), Abbondandelo won the mile at 5:04.10 and then Poore took the 3000m at 10:09.56.
 
Staying in the 1000m that Sessions won, Diana Hammerstone took second at 2:58.75, Kara Bonner took third at 3:01.31 and then Julia Dorley took fourth at 3:01.80. The Brown and White had the first five finishers in the event.
 
In the 3000m, Jamie Zamrin registered a second-place finish with a time of 1:20.71, while freshman Madison Zaun took third at 10:22.47. In the 3000m run, Lehigh took one-two-three.
 
Rounding out the successful performances from the distance group, senior Ashleigh Crawford tallied a fourth-place finish in the mile at 5:08.75.
 
A bunch of Lehigh athletes took second place at Monmouth over the past two days. In the weight throw, Brittany Curtin took second with a throw of 18.14m. Curtin fell to a Monmouth thrower who broke the Hawks' school record. Madison Hackman notched scond in the 60m with a fast time of 8.01. Then Monica McGavin came in second with a time of 1:19.48 in the 500m.
 
After breaking out in the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet, junior Brett DeWeese continued her season surge. The junior had quite the weekend for the Brown and White, as DeWeese took third in the 60mH at 9.18, fourth in the long jump (5.35m) and then seventh in the 60m with a time of 8.12.
 
In the high jump, Calista Marzolino took third in the high jump at 1.55m, Noa Levy finished fifth in the long jump at 5.26m and Anna Murphy finished sixth in the 400m with a time of 1:03.33.
 
Up next, Lehigh concludes its regular season with a big showdown against a rival. The Mountain Hawks will compete at the Bucknell Tune-Up next Friday. The event will be eight days before the Patriot League Championships.
