BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team will conclude its regular season on Friday in Lewisburg, as the Mountain Hawks will compete in the Bucknell Tune-Up. This will be the Brown and White's final competition before the Patriot League Championships next weekend in Rauch Fieldhouse.
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks had one of their best performances of the season at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational. The two-day event saw the Brown and White record a handful of top performances, performances that included wins, second and third-place finishes. Lehigh won five events in total.
Brooke Schaeffer won the 800m with a time of 2:10.70, Jordan Otto secured the victory in the high jump with a mark at 1.65m. Jade Sessions, Nicole Abbondandelo and Susie Poore registered the next three wins for Lehigh. Sessions took first in the 1000m (2:58.35), Abbondandelo won the mile at 5:04.10 and then Poore took the 3000m at 10:09.56.
Brittany Curtin had one of her best showing of the season, throwing over 18m in both throws, Diana Hammerstone took second in the 1000m at 2:58.75, Jamie Zamrin then took second in the 3000m with a time of 1:20.71, while Madison Hackman and Monica McGavin also came in second in the 60m and 500m. Hackman recorded a time of 8:01, while McGavin registered a time of 1:19.48.
"We're in a really good place right now," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We had some solid performances at Monmouth. Brooker had an amazing time, she did it by herself. I'm looking for her to compete in a competition against some people who can really run in her ballpark. In the field events, Brittany had her best showing of the year, our vaulters jumped really well. Rachel Sequeira came back from an injury, her and Cate Shippee both jumped over 11. I like where we are at right now."
"We've had steady improvements all year long, really. We've had a lot of PRs every week. Now the focus turns to this week and really next weekend. We need to be careful and not let Holy Cross and Lafayette sneak up on us. We're looking at times from Army, Navy and Bucknell. Everyone is really close to each other." Utesch said.
This weekend in Lewisburg, the Mountain Hawks will be joined by Bloomsburg University, Penn State Harrisburg, Shippensburg University and the Bison. The field events will begin play at 5:00 p.m., while the running events will start at 6:00 p.m.
"One of the things we have to always do is to always remind them that nerves and pressure is what got them here. Pressure is their friend, it's not an enemy," Utesch stated. "Our whole mission revolves around nerves and pressure and embracing it. In almost every sporting event there is only one team that wins, but in our sport teams and individuals win. You have to understand that the journey to get here is what you have to embrace. We hope and pray that we have good results and winning, but our job is the journey".
Up next, Lehigh will host and compete in the 2020 Indoor Patriot League Championships. The two-day event will begin next Saturday.
