Lehigh drops pair of Opening Day games at Davidson

2/15/2020 9:09:00 PM | Baseball

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The first day of the 2020 season didn't exactly go as planned for the Lehigh baseball team, dropping the first two games of the season, 5-4 and 10-2 to Davidson Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Davidson got on the board first in the second inning of the first game of the doubleheader. The Wildcats pushed three runs across after sophomore right-hander Mason Black sent them down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first.

A triple to left field scored two runs and was followed by a groundout to short to give Davidson a 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats managed to score two more runs, including another RBI triple, to increase the lead to 5-0.

That would mark the end of Black's day, who went five innings and allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Mountain Hawks got two runs back in the top of the seventh inning after freshman Adam Retzbach singled to left field and junior Tyler Schreiner followed him up with a single of his own. Senior Matt Hand reached on an error after a 0-2 count, advancing Retzbach and Schreiner to their respective bases. With the bases loaded, senior Jake Kochmansky singled in both Schreiner and Retzbach to cut the Davidson lead to 5-2.

Lehigh once again made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning, all starting with Retzbach, who was hit by a pitch to get on as the leadoff man. He advanced to second after Schreiner grounded out and to third on a wild pitch. Hand drove in Retzbach on a 2-1 single to center field to make it a 5-3 game.

Kochmansky walked to advance Hand to second base and with junior Quinn McKenna pinch running for Kochmansky, sophomore Gerard Sweeney walked to load the bases with one out.

Another wild pitch brought a run across for the Mountain Hawks, as Hand scored to make it 5-4. But with two runners on, freshman Zack Miles struck out and senior Tony Gallo grounded out to end the threat, as Lehigh fell to Davidson in Game 1.

Schreiner went 2-for-4 in the first game, while Hand was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a hit-by-pitch. Kochmansky went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Pitching in relief of Black, junior Yash Rane had a great outing, throwing three innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts and a walk.

The offense managed seven hits in the second game of the afternoon, but they only produced two runs, as Davidson scored 10 runs on eight hits for the day to get the win.

With sophomore Luke Rettig on the mound, the Wildcats got their lead out to a 8-0 advantage in the sixth inning, seven of the runs, five earned came off Rettig, who exited the game after the third inning, allowing those five earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts, walking three batters. In relief of the southpaw, freshman Ryan Deom was brilliant on the mound, going for three innings, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts.

The Mountain Hawks got their first run of the second game in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice-fly from sophomore Joe Gorla, scoring Schreiner to cut the Davidson lead to 8-1.

The Wildcats got two more runs across in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-1 lead, the runs coming off of sophomore Nick Pave, making his first career appearance, returning from injury.

Senior Tim DiLoreto added a run for Lehigh in the top of the ninth inning on a home run to left field, the first of his career, that cut the lead to 10-2, but it was too little too late.

Gallo went 2-for-3 in the game with a double and a walk, while DiLoreto went 1-for-1 with a home run. Retzbach, Schreiner and sophomores Charlie Von Werne and Cole Humes each chipped in a hit on the day.

Right-hander Sam Wurth finished out the game on the mound in the eighth inning, retiring the side with two strikeouts on nine pitches.

Lehigh will close out the series Sunday with a single game at Davidson with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
