BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After a 2-0 start to kick off Patriot League play and a current first place standing, the Lehigh women's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena Wednesday night to host Boston University with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
In a matchup that saw seven lead changes and 11 ties, the Mountain Hawks prevailed in the closing seconds to come away with a 55-53 victory over Loyola on the road Sunday afternoon.
A back-and-forth contest until the very end, senior Camryn Buhr assisted on the last two baskets by senior Cameryn Benz in the final 30 seconds including a shot with 1.5 seconds to play to put Lehigh over the edge.
Buhr led the charge with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Benz added 10 points and nine rebounds with two assists and two steals. Sophomore Emma Grothaus played well again with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-high four assists. She has now had four straight games where she finished in double scoring figures.
Lehigh shot 37.5 percent from the field but shot 40 percent from the floor during the fourth quarter, holding the Greyhounds to a mark of 35.7 percent during the contest. The Mountain Hawks never led by more than six points in the game, but the defense held on to hold their eighth opponent to under 60 points in a game.
A win for Lehigh over the Terriers on Wednesday would extend its home win streak to nine straight and its regular season league game win streak to eight. The Mountain Hawks would also start the year 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League for the second straight season.
Boston University has had a strong start to Patriot League play, starting the slate off 1-1 with a two-point loss at Lafayette and a 15-point victory against American at home over the weekend.
Against the Eagles, the Terriers held them to just 26 percent (13-for-50) from the field, and to just 44 points, the lowest scoring total in the 18-game series between the two teams.
Maren Durant finished with 10 rebounds and nine points, while Annabelle Larnard and Katie Nelson each tallied 11 points each. Freshman Maggie Pina had a team-high 12 points and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Her performance against American followed her 26 point outing at the Leopards earlier in the week. Pina has led Boston U in scoring in six of the last nine games with three 20-point efforts.
Despite not starting her last game, senior forward Nia Irving is just 15 points away from becoming the 23rd member of the program to join to 1,000-career points milestone. She is currently ranked 23rd in BU history with 985 career points.
The Terriers ended the non-league slate with two consecutive wins over Dartmouth (74-56) and Northeastern (72-56), both at home.
This will be the 16th meeting all-time between the Mountain Hawks and Terriers with BU taking the last two matchups against Lehigh, both during the 2018-19 campaign.
In the last matchup between the two teams back on Feb. 9, 2019 at Stabler Arena, Camryn Buhr led the way with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Cameryn Benz added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Gena Grundhoffer led the way with four assists as the Mountain Hawks fell, 52-48.
Despite trailing in the all-time series, 7-8, Lehigh has a 7-5 lead in Patriot League games against the Terriers dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Service Electric 2 Sports will carry Wednesday night's game with Mike Zambelli and Jim Wills on the call. The game will also be live streamed on the Patriot League Network with live audio available on Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the Play-by-Play call. That pre-game show will begin at 5:50 p.m.
