Mountain Hawks show their grit at both events on Saturday

Bethlehem, Pa. – Competing in its most difficult weekend of the early season, the Lehigh women's track and field team concluded the wintry weather day with positives at both events. In the morning, a few Mountain Hawks competed in the Moravian Indoor Invitational inside Rauch Fieldhouse, while the majority of the squad competed in Staten Island at the UPenn Select.
Rauch Fieldhouse hosted this 15-team field on behalf of Moravian, while the UPenn Select had 8-10 multiple, high quality teams in the field. At the conclusion of the day, 19 women broke their personal PRs.
Starting in the morning inside Rauch, Bree Smentkowski felt right at home, winning the long jump at 5.36m (17'7"), while then finishing sixth in the 200m with a time of 27.50. Maddy Harding had an impressive third finish in the high jump at 1.54m (5 '0.25"), and then Allison Duane finished fourth in the 3000m with a time of 11:11.52.
In the mile run, Sydney Brannon and Emma Linde finished seventh and ninth respectively. Brannon finished seventh with a time of 5:36.17, while Linde then followed suit at 5:38.35. Then at the conclusion of the meet, Anica Pinto and Claire Gatermann were two of a half dozen to finished tied for fifth in the pole vault at 3.05m (10'0").
In Staten Island, the Mountain Hawks faced the best competition they've seen all season. A trio of Lehigh athletes registered second-place finishes. In the shot put, Brittany Curtin finished second with a powerful 17.69m, and then Brooke Schaeffer jetted for second in the 800m at 2:14.27. In the pole vault, Madisyn Hawkins took silver at 3.65m. In the high jump, four Brown and White members finished tied for third at 1.60m. Those athletes included Noa Levy, Jordan Otto, Calista Marzolino and Alexis Wintle.
Right behind Curtin in the weight throw, Teasha McKoy finished fifth, a good showing with a powerful 16.16m. In the 3000m, cross country standout Susie Poore took sixth with a time of 10:08.93, while Jade Sessions finished seventh in the 800m.
In the mile run, Diana Hammerstone competed in a lengthy field and finished 17th at 5:04.50, and then two Lehigh teammates came in 22nd in the 200m and the 400m. In the 200m, Madison Hackman placed 22nd with a time of 25.73, while Kaja Skerlj registered a time of 59.86.
Up next, The Rivalry! The Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet will be held next Saturday inside Rauch.
