BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Competing in its second meet of the season, the Lehigh women's track and field team finished second on Saturday among the 6-team field. Hosting the Angry Birds Challenged in front of a jam-packed crowd, the Mountain Hawks finished with a score of 168 points, eight points behind Bucknell, who won the day with a score of 176 points.
In all, 13 women broke personal PR's, while the Brown and White also won eight events throughout the day.
Coach Matt Utesch knew coming into the day that Patriot League foe Bucknell and Sacred Heart would bring out the best in the athletes and he was right. Lehigh and Bucknell went back-and-forth throughout the day, trading places in the top spot until Bucknell pulled away late to secure the win. At the conclusion of the day, the Brown and White defeated Sacred Heart (third), Fairleigh Dickinson, American and Saint Joseph's.
In the 5000m, Ashleigh Crawford propelled past her opponents with a time 0f 18:50.06, while teammate Madison Zaun finished right behind her for the second spot at 18:53.30. Then in the weight throw, rigning Patriot League champion Britany Curtin proved why she is one of the best, throwing a powerful distance of 16.75m (54'11.50"). Madisyn Hawkins won the pole vault competition on Saturday, jumping at 3.50m (11'5.75"). Her teammate Caitlin Reverand finished right behind her in second at 3.35m.
In a competing field in the high jump, Jordan Otto battled tied for first. Otto and two other athletes all jumped at 1.65m (5'5). In the 4000m DMR, the Brown and White team of Sessions, Mary Casey, Brooke Schaeffer and Diana Hammerstone breezed their way to an easy victory, blowing by their competitors with a time of 12:18.74.
Up next, the women's team will have two events next Saturday.
