BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Riding a four-game winning streak, the Lehigh women's basketball team heads back on the road for the start of a two-game road trip to our nation's capital. The Mountain Hawks face American Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bender Arena with plenty at stake as the team looks to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Eagles.
For the second consecutive season, Lehigh is sitting with an overall record of 11-3 and a Patriot League record of 3-0. With wins over Navy, Loyola and Boston University to open the year, the Mountain Hawks will have an opportunity to start the league season 4-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign.
Wednesday night's 51-34 win over the Terriers had a lot of good consequences for Lehigh, winning its ninth straight home victory and eighth straight Patriot League regular season victory dating back to last season. The 34 points was the least Lehigh has given up to an opponent since 2013 and the Mountain Hawks held BU to zero 3-pointers on the night, a first since Lehigh held Bucknell to 0-for-4 from beyond on Jan. 30, 2008.
The Mountain Hawks were led by sophomore guard Megan Walker, who scored all of her career-high 15 points from long range, with a career-best five makes on eight nine attempts. Senior guard Hannah Hedstrom also poured in a season-high 11 points with a career-high three 3-pointers, while senior forward Mariah Sexe finished with eight points and two 3-pointers.
Lehigh shot just 29.7 percent (19-for-64) from the field, but made a season-high 12 threes on 30 attempts for 40 percent.
The Terriers also shot just 28.6 percent (12-for-42) from the field and committed 21 turnovers, 15 were steals, which Lehigh turned into 15 points. The Mountain Hawks also managed to get 11 second chance points and only committed 10 turnovers for the night.
American enters play on Saturday following a dominant 73-57 victory at home vs. Army West Point. That win makes up for AU's 59-44 defeat at the hands of Boston U. on Sunday.
The Eagles are 2-1 in Patriot League play this season, right in the middle of the back behind Holy Cross, Bucknell and Lehigh, all with league records of 3-0.
Against the Black Knights, Kaitlyn Marenyi led the charge for American with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including going 2-for-4 from beyond-the-arc. She also added nine rebounds in 30 minutes. Three players: Emily Fisher, Maddie Doring and Taylor Brown each chipped in eight points, while Fisher also totaled four boards and five assists. Indeya Sanders led the way with seven dishes, also picking up two steals and two rebounds in 21 minutes.
The Eagles shot 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the field in the win, including 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from 3 and 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the free throw line.
American held Army to just 57 points on 35.9 percent shooting after the Black Knights scored 93 points in a 100-93 loss to Colgate on Sunday.
There is a long history between Lehigh and American dating all the way back to the 1982-83 season. The Eagles lead the all-time pairing, 13-33, with an 11-23 mark in Patriot League contests.
The Eagles have claimed the last seven matchups over the Mountain Hawks dating back to Jan. 7, 2017.

Lehigh's last win over AU came at Bender Arena on Feb. 6, 2016 in a 61-52 victory.
Saturday's matchup also marks the return of Cecily Carl to her roots, as she currently serves as Lehigh's Director of Basketball Operations. The three-time All-League selection for AU, Carl is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year and returns to her alma mater after graduating in 2018 and obtaining her master's degree in 2019.
