
Mountain Hawks ready for Patriot League Championships, beginning Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh men's track and field team is preparing to compete in the Patriot League Championships this weekend, hosted by Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The two-day event begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the 10,000m and concludes on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
Kicking things off for Lehigh are sophomore Bard DeMassa, junior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum and sophomore Seth Slavin, who are all competing in the 10,000m Friday morning.
Junior Kyle Sult is Lehigh's lone multier, competing in the decathlon events beginning Friday at 11 a.m. with the 100m. The decathlon continues into Saturday, concluding with the 1,500m at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday's track events begin with the 3,000m steeplechase, slated to begin at noon. Fifth year John Tolbert, junior Victor Yegon, sophomore Michael Mitchell and sophomore Nick Norton are all competing in the event, with Yegon looking to repeat as Patriot League champion in the steeple.
In throws, sophomore Riley LaRiviere is competing in both the discus and hammer throw. LaRiviere set a personal record in the hammer throw last weekend at the Carol and John Covert Classic, earning a mark of 50.93m.
Senior Alexander Rodgers is also competing in the discus, as well as the shot put. Rodgers set a personal record earlier this season in the discus, throwing a mark of 40.60m at the Lehigh-Lafayette Dual Meet.
In the jumps, junior Erik Metz is set to compete in the long jump and triple jump. Metz set a personal record in the long jump at the Covert Classic, earning a mark of 6.69m.
At February's indoor championships, senior Kyle Berman won the 1000m title, finishing in 2:26.43. The Mountain Hawks finished fourth overall at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, which were hosted by Navy in Annapolis, Md. Lehigh earned seven podium finishes during the two-day event.
At last year's Patriot League Championships, at Lafayette, one Mountain Hawk took home a championship gold medal in Lehigh's fourth place effort. Yegon won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:06.58. Yegon broke his personal record by over 17 seconds in route to claiming the first league title of his career.
Following this weekend's championship, Lehigh will compete in the West Point Twilight meet on Thursday, hosted by Army in West Point, N.Y. Qualifying athletes will compete in the ECAC/IC4A championships in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday and Sunday.
