Mountain Hawks set for home rematch with FDU on Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After a tough weekend at West Point that saw the team lose two of three Patriot League games to Army, Lehigh baseball returns home to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park for a mid-week non-league contest with Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday's game will be a rematch between the two teams, as the Mountain Hawks were victorious over the Knights in Teaneck, N.J., 20-6 back on Mar. 19.
Lehigh is coming off a tough road series at Army after winning its biggest comeback in the Patriot League era last Wednesday afternoon at Saint Joseph's in a 20-15 victory that went to extra innings. The last time the Mountain Hawks found themselves playing on their own turf, was against La Salle in a losing effort last Tuesday, with the Explorers coming out the winners, 14-6 in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
The Lehigh offense has not been a concern this season, as the team currently leads the Patriot League in runs scored per game with 6.77, while currently seated second in the league in hits per game with 8.77. Senior left fielder Ryan Malloy continues to pace the league with a league-best .347 batting average. Senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt is fifth with a .321 mark. Malloy also leads the league in slugging percentage (.669), is tied in home runs (8) and has a 10-base lead in the total bases category (79).
Shanfeldt went into the Army West Point series with the second-best batting average in the Patriot League with a .347 mark, but left with a .321 average after not registering a hit in all three games. This is the first time Shanfeldt went three straight games without tallying a hit since the stretch of games to begin the season at Duke (Feb. 15-17). Aside from last weekend, Shanfeldt has been excellent this season and is one of the key reasons for the Mountain Hawks' offensive success throughout the 2019 season. He has still hit .378 (14-for-37) with a six doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs in his last 10 games. He will have an opportunity to help the team succeed at the plate against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday.
The Mountain Hawks have gotten a recent jolt on offense as well from freshman Gerard Sweeney, who has hit .344 (11-for-32) with a home run, two doubles, and has driven in nine runs in his last 10 games. Sweeney, along with junior Tony Gallo have performed very well recently, as Gallo also has hit .344 in his last 10 games, with three doubles, a triple and a home run with 10 RBIs.
On the mound, the Mountain Hawks got solid outings from Luke Rettig and Matt Svanson over the weekend, but probably as of late, senior left-hander Ethan Frohman has been the most impressive of all. In his three appearances over the last 10 games for Lehigh, Frohman has not allowed a run with only six hits and three strikeouts, while going 2-0 in 7 1/3 innings of work out of the bullpen. Junior Matt Hand has also been impressive in relief as well as his offensive approach at shortstop. Hand has a 1.80 ERA in three appearances in the last 10 days, allowing just one earned run with six hits and five strikeouts. He finished off SJU last Wednesday to pick up the victory in 10 innings.
Fairleigh Dickinson has not fared well in its last games since taking on the Mountain Hawks in March. The Knights are 4-23-1 on the season and have lost their last six games.
FDU is led offensively by Adam Frank, who paces the team with a .326 batting average. Nate Brodsky has a .288 mark in 25 games this season, as Sal Monticciolo leads the squad with seven home runs and 24 RBIs with a slugging percentage of .495.
On the mound, Brendan Medoro is 3-3 on the year, leading the team with a starters' ERA of 5.89. Dillon Forsythe's 3.60 ERA leads the team overall.
All-time, Fairleigh Dickinson leads the all-time series 11-6.
Lehigh freshman right-hander Mason Black (0-0, 14.04 ERA) is scheduled to take the hill for his third start of the season on Wednesday.
