Strong pitching not enough to get Lehigh past Army in extra innings

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Although stellar outings on the mound from Luke Rettig and Matt Svanson set the tone for the game, leading to extra innings, but Army West Point walked it off in the bottom of the 11th inning to come away with the win and the series victory, 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
Rettig was as good as you could possibly ask for out of the freshman left-hander. He pitched a masterful six innings on the mound, allowing just two earned runs while giving up six hits with four strikeouts and only one walk against the Black Knights (17-14, 6-4 PL). For as good as the Army hitting has been this season, it was a good sign to see Rettig pitching well to give the Mountain Hawks (13-18, 3-7 PL) some sort of little victory on the mound, who have been struggling in the last handful of games.
"Luke gave us a tremendous start today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He got us deep into the game and really competed at a high level. He made a major stride forward today as a weekend starter."
Even in relief of Rettig, Svanson got the rare opportunity to come into the game in relief, and he was also terrific, going 4 2/3 innings with just five hits allowed and no earned runs.
"Svanson was equally impressive to Rettig," said Leary. "The entire time he was in the game, it was full of high leverage moments and he consistently made great pitches and got big outs."
Lehigh's offense took off in the top of the third inning when Quinn McKenna smashed his third home run of the season to left field to pull the Mountain Hawks out in front, 1-0.
The Black Knights answered right back in the bottom of the third inning with a two-RBI single to give Army West Point the lead, 2-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Tony Gallo singled to right field, scoring Jeff Shanfeldt to tie the ballgame at 2.
And in the bottom of the 11th inning, a fielding error allowed Anfernee Crompton to come in and score to give the Black Knights the walk-off victory to a final score of 3-2.
Gerard Sweeney was the Mountain Hawks' lone batter to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a walk. Tony Gallo went 1-for-5 with an RBI while Quinn McKenna went 1-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI. Only Eric Cichocki and Matt Hand had the other hits for Lehigh in the ballgame.
Lehigh will now get ready for a mid-week non-league matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to begin a four-game homestand through the weekend.
