Women’s rowing puts forth strong effort against Patriot League foes Navy and Georgetown

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh women's rowing team went up against a pair of Patriot League opponents on Saturday in Annapolis, putting forth a solid showing against Navy and Georgetown. The Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four each finished ahead of Georgetown; the Varsity Four finish was especially significant, considering the Hoyas' V4 took home gold at the Patriot League Championship last season.
"I thought overall, the women raced incredibly well against two really fast teams," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It definitely shows that Navy is near the top of our league. It was great to be on the water next to them and see that speed."
The Varsity Eight finished in third with a time of 6:52.1, but the margin (17.7 seconds) was less than the margin between Lehigh and Navy at last year's championship. Last season, the Mids' V8 captured gold at Patriots, just over 19 seconds before the Mountain Hawks finished.
"We actually executed our race plans incredibly well and we were able to close margins on Navy more so than we've had in the past, which is great to see," said Conley. "We have more work to do and more speed to find. We hope to be able to find that by Patriots."
Lehigh's Second Varsity Eight placed third (7:04.8), behind a pair of Navy boats and ahead of Georgetown (7:12.0). The Mountain Hawks' Varsity Four finished second (7:51.8), ahead of the Hoyas (8:00.5).
The Mountain Hawks will return to action in 24 hours when they host the River Cup at Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa.
"I know coming back on short rest will put us in a deficit compared to our competitors, but we'll go in with the same race plan as we did today, which should work to our benefit," said Conley.
