Mountain Hawks capture River Cup in successful day of racing
4/7/2019 7:27:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team captured the women's, men's and overall River Cup once again on Sunday as the Mountain Hawks enjoyed impressive success against rival Lafayette on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown. Lehigh's Women's and Men's Varsity Eights both comfortably took first place to bring the River Cup home for yet another year. The day also featured racing against Bucknell (men), Mercyhurst and Jefferson. The winners of the morning Varsity Eights raced each other in the afternoon, with second-place finishers racing each other.
Â
In the end, Lehigh's women won every race in which they competed.
Â
"It was great to see that the women were able to sweep all the races today, having come off racing the day before (against Navy and Georgetown in Annapolis)," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It speaks volumes to the work they've put in. It was great to see the men get a full race under their belts and line up next to Mercyhurst, who's usually a top contender at Dad Vails."

In the morning, the Women's Varsity Eight took first over Lafayette with ease, finishing in 6:33.31, more than 15 seconds ahead of the Leopards (6:48.4). The Mountain Hawks' Second Varsity Eight wasn't far behind, posting a time of 6:51.5.
Â
On the men's side, the Varsity Eight finished in 5:56.3, more than seven seconds ahead of Lafayette (6:03.7). Lehigh's 2V placed third (6:07.3).
Â
To round out the morning races, Lehigh's Women's Varsity Four (7:34.41), Women's Novice Eight (6:53.11) and Men's Varsity Four (6:28.35) all finished first.
Â
The afternoon was highlighted by Lehigh's Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight each beating Jefferson. For complete results, please see below.
Â
"We talked a lot about trying to attack the third 500 meters of the race and the Women's Varsity Eight was working to accomplish that today, which they will need for Patriots," said Conley.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will enjoy a weekend off from racing before returning to action in two weeks. They will head to the Cherry Hill Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 20 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Â
"With having such a heavy load of racing one weekend then having next weekend off, it will allow us to learn and put things together to try and find more speed moving forward," said Conley.
