Lehigh returns to action this weekend at Cherry Hill Invitational and Kerr Cup

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team returns to action for the first time in two weekends when the women compete at the Cherry Hill Invitational, while the men row in the Kerr Cup. The regattas are on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, respectively.

Most recently, the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a strong effort to capture the River Cup against school rival Lafayette, while also competing against – and enjoying some success – against Mercyhurst, Jefferson and Bucknell (men).

Lehigh hasn't faced outside competition since that Apr. 7 regatta, but has remained hard at work looking to get better every day in practice.

"We've spent a great deal of time trying different lineups, playing with the actual mechanics of the physical boats themselves to try and find more speed," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "This [two week stretch] was our last big opportunity for big changes before we start refining everything for Patriots (women) and Dad Vails (men). This coming weekend will tell if those changes were for the benefit of speed."

The Mountain Hawks know no matter what the next day brings (whether it's a regatta, practice or training session), it's a piece of the puzzle towards being their best selves come May.

"We have done a great job of treating each weekend as if it's preparation for our championships," said Conley. "Even when there were dips in energy, there were leaders on the team that would recognize it and step forward to bring the team back to what was important."

Due in large part to the the leadership he has seen, Conley likes where the Mountain Hawks stand, with the Patriot League Championship and Dad Vail Regatta right around the corner.

"Looking back on the season so far, I believe we're in a strong position on the women's side because of great leadership our seniors and other members of the women's team provided throughout the year," said Conley. "They picked up where we left off previously and that can sometimes be very hard to follow and keep perpetuating, but they didn't hesitate.

"For the men, it has been a great year of growth in maturity which is helping us on the race course," Conley continued. "They struggled early on with illness and injury and came out the other side finding similar speed that we had last year, despite losing some strong rowers to graduation. Where we can always work is finding the top-end speed to put our top varsity boats at the front of our competition. I think I'll always say that even when we're in front."

Following this weekend's action, the women's team returns to the water on Saturday, May 4 by hosting Delaware on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown. That same day, the men travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple.
