Mountain Hawks enjoy success at Cherry Hill Invitational

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Lehigh women's rowing team returned to action for the first time in two weekends, bouncing back from a tough start in the heats to post strong results in their petite finals at the Cherry Hill Invitational Saturday. The Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four all competed against a strong group of regional crews.

"We had a bit of a slow start in our heats across the board as a team," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It was a little disappointing in terms of how we raced our heats, not having our best races, particularly since we had so much time for practice before (two weeks since the last regatta). What was nice, however, was that the women were able to collect themselves and show what speed we have in the petite finals, putting together some pretty good performances against some really tough teams.

"Our ultimate goal is always to make the grand finals; unfortunately we didn't do that today, but I think we learned a few things about how to do that for the Patriot League Championships, which will be important moving forward."

The Varsity Eight began the day with a time of 7:19.93 in its heat, advancing to the petite final where it bettered its time (7:13.77) and finished ahead of Old Dominion and Fordham.

"The Varsity Eight went out and had a bit of a rough first race, but still was able to hang with and actually beat a couple crews that we typically have not beaten in the past," said Conley. "They were able to hang with UConn and were able to beat Delaware in the heat, and then in the final, were able to add on some additional crews that typically we have not beaten in the past. It was great to see them step up in that regard."

Also competing Saturday was the Second Varsity Eight, which finished third in its heat (7:39.28) before finishing fifth in the final (7:38.56), ahead of Old Dominion. Meanwhile, the Varsity Four came in fourth in its heat (8:45.11) before an impressive second-place finish in the petite final (8:32.99), ahead of Delaware, Fordham, Marist and Old Dominion.

The Mountain Hawks return to the water two Saturdays from now (May 4) when they host Delaware on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown.
