BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The final non-league game of the 2019 season is on Wednesday, as Lehigh baseball travels to Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. to conclude the home-and-home and set up the final weekend of the regular season.

Lehigh got the best of the Peacocks the last time the two played this season, with the Mountain Hawks winning, 13-5 back on Mar. 27 at J. David Walker Field.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a disappointing weekend, where the team fell in a doubleheader at Navy Saturday and a doubleheader at Bucknell on Sunday to now trail Lafayette by three games with four to play for the fourth and final spot in the Patriot League Tournament.

Lehigh's magic number to clinch a tournament spot is now seven, as any combination of Lehigh wins and Lafayette losses that equal seven will clinch the Mountain Hawks' first berth to the tournament since 2016.

Junior first baseman Tony Gallo continues to hold the team lead in batting average by hitting .325 (49-for-151) in 42 games this season. He has eight doubles and six home runs, along with 40 RBIs on the season. Senior left fielder Ryan Malloy is Lehigh's only other .300 hitter, currently hitting .319 (51-for-160) with 12 doubles and a team-high eight home runs with 37 RBIs. He has a team-best .575 slugging percentage with an on-base percentage of .405. His combined OPS of .980 leads the team. Senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt has also been excellent in his final season in the Brown and White, third on the team in batting with a .298 average (45-for-151) along with a team-high 14 doubles and seven home runs with a team-high 43 RBIs. He has also walked 31 times this season and leads his teammates in OBP with a .442 mark and is second with a .530 slugging percentage, adding up to a second-best mark in OP at .972.

Shanfeldt hit his seventh home run of the season on Sunday in a loss to Bucknell, but increased his team's season total to 36 homers on the year, which still leads the Patriot League.

The Mountain Hawks have been fortunate to have the services of two players that have come on in recent weeks man the lineup with freshman third baseman Gerard Sweeney and sophomore right fielder Tyler Schreiner. Sweeney is hitting .282 (46-for-163) in his rookie season with Lehigh, playing 43 of the team's 44 games this season. He has nine doubles and 28 RBIs this year and is third on the team in walks with 26 for an on-base percentage of .385. Schreiner is hitting .286 (28-for-98) this year, which is fourth on the team and has five doubles, a triple and a home run along with 27 RBIs in 2017. He has been a clutch option in the bottom of the order for the Mountain Hawks in 2019 and continues to improve week in and week out.

Freshman left-hander Matt Stamford will make his third start of the season on Wednesday against Saint Peter's and is coming off a pretty solid outing last week when Coppin State visited Bethlehem on Wednesday. Stamford allowed three runs, one earned and two hits over four innings of work, while walking two and striking out five batters on 71 pitches. On the year, Stamford has made 10 appearances and is 1-1 with one save and an ERA of 5.18.

Saint Peter's is looking for life against Lehigh on Wednesday, as their season continues on. The Peacocks split a series this past weekend with Fairleigh-Dickinson and are 3-36 this season so far. Peter Ferony leads the team in average with a .301 mark (44-for-146), while six different players have tallied one of the team's six home runs this season. On the mound, Steve Epstein continues to be the team's best option out of the bullpen, with an ERA of 4.43. He has struck out 28 batters, walked 13 in 42 2/3 innings of work.

Lehigh leads the all-time series with Saint Peter's, 10-1 after claiming the last matchup earlier this season. The last time the Mountain Hawks played the Peacocks at Jaroschak Field, they were victorious, 27-2.
