Lehigh drops tough road contest to Saint Peter's, 8-6

5/1/2019 8:45:00 PM | Baseball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The walk-off home run was the theme on Wednesday afternoon, but this time it was Saint Peter's that ended up on that side of things, as the Peacocks (4-37, 2-13 MAAC) took down the Mountain Hawks (20-25, 8-13 PL), 8-6 at Jaroschak Field.

Despite giving up the walk-off home run in the ninth inning, it was senior right hander Cole McManimon who pitched as well as you could have asked for up until that point. Prior to the ending, McManimon threw five shutout innings and only surrendered a couple of hits with five strikeouts. This relief appearance was his first since Feb. 24 against Mount St. Mary's.

The Mountain Hawks set the tone in the game from the get-go with a solo home run for senior Jeff Shanfeldt in the top of the first inning to put Lehigh up, 1-0. The homer was Shanfeldt's eighth of the year, putting him in a tie for the team-lead with Ryan Malloy.

The Peacocks answered back with a two-run shot of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.

After a Jake Kochmansky sacrifice-fly, it was freshman Gerard Sweeney that broke the game open with his three-RBI double to left center field, putting Lehigh up 5-2.

Saint Peter's took over the lead after scoring four unanswered runs between the second and third innings.

As McManimon continued to shut down the Saint Peter's offense, a Tyler Schreiner groundout scored Kochmansky in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 6.

It took until the bottom of the ninth for any side to generate offense, as Hunter Mason went deep for the second time on the afternoon, this time against McManimon with the walk-off two-run homer to left center.

The Mountain Hawks combined to tally five hits with five different players getting a knock. Only Gerard Sweeney finished with multiple RBIs, going 1-for-3, with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Junior center fielder Mike Maguire ended up playing out of the leadoff spot for the first time all season, this time playing in the 6-hole and despite going 0-for-2 from the plate, he walked three times and scored a run.

The loss brings down Lehigh's record to 20-25 on the season with just four games to play this weekend against Army West Point and Holy Cross. Saturday marks Senior Day for the Mountain Hawks, with six players, Chris Butera, Ethan Frohman, Thomas Schumacher, Jeff Shanfeldt, Cole McManimon and Ryan Malloy being honored prior to the start of the game. All four games this weekend will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
