Seniors shine, Lehigh drops two to Army West Point Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Saturday afternoon was all about recognizing a senior class that meant so much in growing the Lehigh baseball program over the last four years, unfortunately the Mountain Hawks couldn't pull off the victories, falling to Army West Point in both games on Senior Day and eliminating themselves from postseason contention at J. David Walker Field.
Game 1 was mostly a pitcher's duel between Army's Tyler Giovinco and junior right-hander Levi Stoudt, as the Mountain Hawks' offense faltered for most of the game against the senior southpaw.
A sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and a two-RBI single in the top of the sixth inning pushed the Black Knights out in front 3-0 heading into Lehigh's final two frames.
Stoudt ended up throwing a complete game in what could be his final game pitching for the Brown and White, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out seven batters.
Lehigh made a final push in the bottom of the seventh inning looking to keep its tournament hopes alive as junior center fielder Mike Maguire doubled to right field, scoring Matt Hand to make it 3-1. A Jeff Shanfeldt sacrifice fly with two outs scored Eric Cichocki to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ryan Malloy had a chance to tie the game and send it to extras, but his sharply laced liner found the glove of the shortstop, who flipped it to second for the fielder's choice putout.
The loss coupled with Lafayette's win over Holy Cross officially ousted the Mountain Hawks from the tournament for the third season in a row, as Lehigh fell to 20-26 overall, 8-14 in Patriot League play.
Maguire had Lehigh's lone multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Sweeney, Shanfeldt, Matt Hand and Thomas Schumacher each registered a hit to their totals.
The Mountain Hawks tried hard to get right back to work in the second game of the day, which had a similar, yet very different trajectory overall. Despite getting out-hit 16-5 during the course of the afternoon, Lehigh managed to hang with the Black Knights for 13 innings, eventually falling 8-7 to end the day.
Ryan Malloy got the scoring first and put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard with his two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, with a 2-0 lead.
After giving up an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, Malloy and Tony Gallo scored on an error from the pitcher in the bottom of the inning, to take a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Gerard Sweeney's sacrifice fly scored Eric Cichocki to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead to 5-1.
The Black Knights tied the game back up at 5 in the top of the seventh inning on an Andre Walden grand slam, but Lehigh regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Jeff Shanfeldt walk with the bases loaded and a Malloy sacrifice fly, making it 7-5.
Trey Martin doubled to right center and brought in two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7 and then the teams battled for the next four innings until a Jeremiah Adams double to right center brought in what became the winning run in the top of the 13th inning, as Army held on for the 8-7 victory.
Senior Ethan Frohman, though picking up the no-decision, pitched extremely well in his final start in a Lehigh uniform, throwing 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits, walking one and striking out seven batters on 100 pitches.
At the plate, Mike Maguire was fantastic on getting on base, as he went 0-for-1 with three walks and two sacrifice bunts. Sweeney, Malloy and Cichocki each doubled for the Mountain Hawks, as three of the team's five hits throughout the game. Lehigh walked a total of eight times, led by Maguire's three and Tony Gallo's two bases on balls.
With just two games remaining in the schedule against Holy Cross, Lehigh will just look to end the season on a high note by playing its final games at J. David Walker Field to conclude the 2019 season.
Both games Sunday will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
