Lehigh drops pair of away games at Bucknell to conclude league road slate

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The offense showed signs of life in both games, but late deficits and rallies from Bucknell, proved to be too difficult to rebound from, as Lehigh baseball drops a pair of road tilts to the Bison Sunday afternoon at DePew Field, both by the score of 6-5.
In the first game of the twin billing, Bucknell claimed an early 2-0 lead off Lehigh left-hander Luke Rettig on a two-RBI single to left field in the bottom of the second inning.
Lehigh was able to get a run back on a Jeff Shanfeldt RBI single to left field in the top of the third, as Ryan Malloy then singled through the left side, bringing in Gerard Sweeney to tie the game up at 2.
Runs No. 3 and 4 came in for the Mountain Hawks in the same inning, as Tyler Schreiner walked with the bases loaded and then a Matt Hand SAC-fly brought in another run to take a 4-2 lead.
Four runs came across for the Bison in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead as Mason Black relieved Rettig after he pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
With the game hanging in the balance, Shanfeldt came through in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run down the left field line, his seventh of the season to make it 6-5, Bucknell.
However, that's all the Mountain Hawks were able to muster against the Bison in the seventh, as Lehigh fell in Game 1, 6-5.
Shanfeldt ended up finishing the game 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk, a hit by pitch, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Sophomore Eric Cichocki went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, finishing with the only other multi-hit game for the team.
The offense got out to a more prominent start in Game 2, as the Mountain Hawks led 3-0 after three innings. For the second straight game, Schreiner walked with the bases loaded, making it 1-0 Lehigh in the top of the first. Gerard Sweeney doubled down the left field line, bringing in Cichocki to make it 2-0, as Shanfeldt scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.
Bucknell scored four more times between the third and sixth innings before Sweeney once again came through in the eighth inning with a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring both Mike Maguire and Jake Kochmansky to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The score would hold, as the Bison held on for the 6-5 victory in Game 2 to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Jason Reynolds (2-6) was charged with the loss after going 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, two earned on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts on 82 pitches. Peter Woltersdorf came in for relief and went 3 2/3, allowing two runs, none earned on three hits with two strikeouts to close out the game.
Gerard Sweeney had a really solid day for the Mountain Hawks both at the plate and in the field at third base, where he made a couple of dazzling plays. He went 3-for-5 with his two doubles and three RBIs to pace Lehigh. Maguire, Tony Gallo, Schreiner and Kochmansky each tallied a hit for the Mountain Hawks in the defeat.
With the setbacks, Lehigh falls to 20-24 overall, 8-13 in Patriot League play and trails Lafayette by three games with just four league games remaining. The Leopards split both days this weekend with a win over Bucknell on Saturday and a win over Navy on Sunday.
The Mountain Hawks will visit Saint Peter's on Wednesday in the final road game, as well as the final non-league game of the regular season before returning home next weekend for Senior Day Saturday against Army West Point and then Sunday against Holy Cross at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
