BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding four straight wins, capped off by a dominant 20-3 victory over American Friday, the sixth-seeded Lehigh women's lacrosse team kicks off the Patriot League Tournament on Sunday at No. 3 seed Army West Point. Gametime for the quarterfinals is set for 1 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks needed every one of their four victories to make their sixth straight Patriot League Tournament. Going into Friday, both Lehigh and American knew that with a win, it would qualify for the postseason and with a defeat, its season would be over. The Mountain Hawks left little doubt in their largest margin of victory since 2011.
Lehigh opened the scoring just 1:09 into the contest, and adding another just 1:25 later. The Eagles pulled within 2-1, but that's as close as they would come. The Mountain Hawks responded with runs of 4-0, 5-0 and 9-0 to pick up their largest win vs. American in program history.
Senior Courtney Henig led the offense with seven points (four goals, three assists), all coming in the first half. She became the first player in Jill Redfern's 11 seasons as Lehigh head coach to record 7+ points in three straight games. Henig was coming off seven points at Lafayette and nine at Bucknell to earn Patriot League Attacker of the Week. Senior Kellie Gough added five goals and now has 16 goals over her last three games. Junior defender Alexandra Ladda was stellar again, posting two caused turnovers and shutting down 50-goal scorer Emma Vinall (holding her to just one free position goal). Ladda also scored her first-career goal in transition on the other end.
Junior Sondra Dickey filled up the stat sheet, posting a career-high five caused turnovers to go with six draw controls. She's up to 75 this season and 166 in her career, within striking distance of Kayleen Kelly's season (86) and career (169) marks. Dickey has five or more draw controls in each of her last six games (posting 40, after 35 in her first 10 games of the year).
Lehigh will be facing an Army team playing in its first-ever Patriot League Tournament. In just their fourth year of varsity lacrosse, the Black Knights broke through with a 13-4 overall record in the regular season, including 6-3 in league play. Their 15-9 win at Boston University last weekend was the difference in Army being the No. 3 seed vs. the No. 4 seed. The Black Knights capped off the regular season with a 15-5 win over Bucknell. Army has three players with 50 or more points, led by Carolina Raymond's 62 (39 goals, 23 assists). Jackie Brattan owns 56 points (team-leading 55 goals, one assist) and Samantha Stewart has 52 (35 goals, 17 assists). Brattan leads the team in draw controls (93) while Stewart owns a team-leading 34 groundballs and Lauren Bredenburg leads the way in caused turnovers (20). Maddie Burns has started all but one game in goal, owning a 10.55 GAA and 46.1 save percentage.
Army defeated Lehigh in a tight contest in the regular season, 15-13, for its first-ever win over the Mountain Hawks. One big bright spot for the Mountain Hawks was the draw, where they held a 16-13 edge – led by 10 from Dickey to tie a single-game school record. Lehigh won the first three all-time meetings vs. Army – 14-6 in 2016, 15-8 in 2017 and 15-8 in 2018.
If the Mountain Hawks win on Sunday, they would advance to the Patriot League Semifinals for a fourth straight season and face top-seeded Loyola on Thursday.
