ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Despite a pitcher's duel between Lehigh baseball's ace right-hander Levi Stoudt and Navy righty Noah Song, the Mountain Hawks dropped both games of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the Midshipmen at Max Bishop Stadium.
Stoudt was excellent in his start, throwing six strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned while surrendering two walks and struck out seven batters against Navy which was filled with Major League scouts on hand to see the junior oppose Song, who was also dominant, notching the complete game shutout with 15 strikeouts.
Though he pitched well enough to keep Navy from tacking on any more than two runs on the day, Stoudt was unable to record his fourth victory of the season, as he falls to 3-3 on the 2019 season.
Tyler Schreiner led Lehigh's offense by going 2-for-3, while Gerard Sweeney and Matt Hand also tallied base hits in the loss.
Game 2 had Lehigh get out in front first, in the top of the second inning, as Schreiner's two-RBI triple scored both Ryan Malloy and Tony Gallo to give the Mountain Hawks an early 2-0 lead.
However, Navy came right back against senior left-hander Ethan Frohman in the bottom of the inning, scoring seven runs against the southpaw, before Matt Svanson eventually came in relief of Frohman. The Mids managed to score eight in the inning, getting out to a commanding lead.
Navy scored again in the fifth and sixth innings before adding two more runs to its total in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the 12-2 victory.
Ryan Malloy continued to add hits to his total, despite not being able to get any runs in, as the left fielder went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the second game of the day. Schreiner went 1-for-4 with his triple and two RBIs, while Mike Maguire and pinch-hitter Jake Kochmansky added single hits.
With the loss, the Mountain Hawks drop to 20-22 overall and 8-11 in the Patriot League. After Saturday, Lehigh is a game behind fourth place Lafayette, after the Leopards split a doubleheader with Bucknell in Lewisburg.
Sunday, Lehigh will look to take down the Bison, as Lafayette heads to Navy for two games. The Mountain Hawks still have an opportunity to either tie or take a game lead over Lafayette for the fourth seed in the race for a Patriot League tournament spot.
The first game of the day on Sunday with Bucknell will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
