Late push not enough as Mountain Hawks fall to Holy Cross, 5-4

WORCESTER, Mass. — Lehigh baseball makes a late game push thanks to the two-run home run for Ryan Malloy in the top of the eighth inning, but the Crusaders (7-22, 4-3 PL) hold on for the 5-4 victory, as the Mountain Hawks (11-15, 2-5 PL) drop two of three Sunday morning at Fitton Field.
Lehigh had all the hope in the world when Malloy launched a 1-0 pitch to left field for the two-run blast, but Holy Cross shut the door in the final inning to come out on top to conclude the series.
It was all Holy Cross from the get-go as the Crusaders scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double through the right side and followed that up with an RBI single through the left side in the bottom half of the third inning. That gave Holy Cross an early 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, junior second baseman Tony Gallo took a pitch for a ride and homered to left field, scoring two runs and tied the game up at 2.
The Crusaders got three more runs back in the fourth and sixth innings, extending their lead to 5-2 before Malloy's home run in the eighth inning made it a one-run ballgame.
The Mountain Hawks had a tough time figuring out how to hit off of Patriot League Pitcher of the Week Liam Dvorak, who threw seven inning, allowing four hits, two runs and struck out 10.
Despite getting replaced heading into the fourth inning, Lehigh starter Luke Rettig threw three inning, allowing just two earned runs over three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Matt Svanson (0-4, 7.99 ERA) came in for relief and picked up the loss, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs, while striking out two Crusaders. Ethan Frohman held up his end of the bargain, throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while walking one batter and striking out two.
Offensively, it was much of the same for senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt, who got right back on track by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. His on-base streak of 20 straight games was snapped in Game 2 on Saturday, but he was able to get his batting average back to over .300, currently hitting .318 on the season.
Ryan Malloy's home run is his Patriot League-leading seventh of the season, also increasing his RBI total to 25 on the year. Gallo's homer in the fourth inning was his third of the year and first since Mar. 8 vs. Monmouth. He now has a hit in six straight games. The Mountain Hawks have now homered in seven of their last eight games dating back to Game 2 of the series against Lafayette on Mar. 23. Lehigh continues to pace the Patriot League in home runs, with 21 through the team's first 26 games.
The loss for Lehigh is its second straight and the Mountain Hawks are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Lehigh will look to regroup when it returns home to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park on Tuesday to host La Salle at 3 p.m.
