The Mountain Hawks got going early in the bottom of the first inning after senior Jeff Shanfeldt homered down the left field line, just inside the left field foul pole, scoring Gerard Sweeney to pull ahead, 2-0. The home run was Shanfeldt's third of the year and he got his 25th RBI of the season as well.
La Salle pulled even in the top of the third inning after a wild pitch scored a runner and then an RBI single off starter Mason Black tied the game at 2.
In the bottom of the third inning, Lehigh surged ahead thanks to Ryan Malloy's eighth home run of the season, scoring Shanfeldt on the two-run shot to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-2 lead.
La Salle took over the game between the fourth and seventh innings after two of Tatem Levins' three home runs and a pair of doubles and a single made it 11-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Malloy answered back with a single through the left side, scoring Chase Carlson to cut the deficit to 11-5, while Tyler Schreiner singled to right field, scoring Sweeney to make it 11-6.
Levins homered for the third time in the game in the top of the eighth inning, as the Explorers took a 13-6 lead and then got another on an RBI single in the ninth inning to hold on for the 14-6 win.
"I thought we came out with a good approach offensively and jumped out to an early lead," said head coach Sean Leary. "Unfortunately, we've been struggling with the big innings, we've been struggling with some of our mid-week pitching and today we got to a point where we just couldn't stop the momentum they had.
"I give La Salle their credit, but at the same time, we've really got some work to do to be a little sharper in our mid-week games."
Malloy went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, with a run scored and a stolen base. Shanfeldt was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Schreiner went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Sweeney was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
The Mountain Hawks struggled on the mound, as sophomore Peter Woltersdorf (2-2) was charged with the loss. Yash Rane struck out five batters despite allowing six runs, five earned on eight hits in four innings of work.
"We've been banged up quite a bit on the mound," Leary said. "So we've been a little shorter than we'd like to be and sometimes when you get to that point, you hit a point in the season where guys are a little fatigued, hitting the wall a little bit. It's not an excuse, but we trust our guys, we believe in them, but this isn't a time for us to make adjustments or get angry with them, we just need to work with them to get better."
Lehigh falls to 11-16 on the year and look to break a four game losing streak against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+($) and audio through the Saint Joe's website.
