Mountain Hawks drop Spring Break finale to VMI

3/17/2019 4:54:00 PM | Baseball

LEXINGTON, Va. — Lehigh baseball was looking for the chance to come away from the weekend with a sweep of VMI on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't to be, as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Keydets, 11-1 at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The three-game series as a whole was all over the place after a pitcher's duel on Friday night resulted in a 1-0 win for Lehigh and then a 15-13 extra-inning affair took place on Saturday. On Sunday, it was all VMI from the get-go, leading the entirety of the game from the start.

Between the second and third innings, VMI took a 5-0 lead, with hits and walks off right-hander Matt Svanson (0-2).

In the top of the fifth inning, Eric Cichocki grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Matt Hand to cut the deficit to 5-1.

A couple of extra base hits, including a triple and a double, as well as a pair of base hits contributed to the Keydets' next six runs of the game, ending the afternoon with an 11-1 victory.

The Mountain Hawks managed to only get three hits total for the game, as Hand went 1-for-3 with a walk and his run scored. Catcher Tim DiLoreto went 1-for-2 coming off the bench and Chase Carlson got himself a hit in his lone at-bat of the game.

Senior left fielder Ryan Malloy went 0-for-4 on the afternoon and didn't reach base, as his on-base streak ends at 12 straight games dating back to the second game of the season, Feb. 16 at Duke.

Sunday also marked the first appearance on the mound for freshman right-hander Mason Black, who went an inning, allowing just one earned run on two hits, while striking out three batters.

The Mountain Hawks close out their Spring Break trip with a 5-4 record and head into the upcoming week with a 7-8 overall record. Lehigh will take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday in Teaneck, N.J. and then return to Bethlehem for the home opener against Penn Wednesday at 3 p.m.
