Lehigh gets to .500 by defeating FDU, 20-6

3/19/2019 9:46:00 PM | Baseball

TEANECK, N.J. — There was no shortage of run support on Tuesday afternoon as the Lehigh baseball team put together a 20-run performance to notch its eighth win of the 2019 campaign with a 20-6 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The Mountain Hawks strung together an impressive top of the second inning, where they scored 11 runs on just four hits with an error. It was a wacky inning to say the least, as Lehigh walked five times in the inning, had three hit batters and even scored on a balk.

Lehigh also scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to senior Jeff Shanfeldt's two-RBI single, another balk that scored Shanfeldt and then two SAC-flies off the bats of Tyler Schreiner and Eric Cichocki.

The top of the sixth inning started with a walk to senior Ryan Malloy, singles from Jeff Shanfeldt and Casey Rother and then an RBI single for Matt Hand. Schreiner walked with the bases loaded to bring yet another run across the plate and then Cichocki's SAC-fly scored Rother to give the Mountain Hawks a 20-6 advantage.

Malloy showed the same dominant form he has maintained as of late for Lehigh, going 2-for-3 with a double, four runs scored and three walks. Casey Rother went 2-for-2 with two sacrifice-flies and a walk. Tyler Schreiner went 1-for-2 with a double, SAC bunt, SAC fly and a walk with five RBIs. Gerard Sweeney went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and three RBIs. Jeff Shanfeldt finished the afternoon going 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBIs.

On the mound, Peter Woltersdorf allowed three hits and two earned runs to go with his five strikeouts in his 2.1 innings of work in relief, as freshman Matt Stamford pitched the final five innings of the game without allowing a run and only giving up four hits with four strikeouts.

The Mountain Hawks get back to .500 with the win, starting the season's first 16 games of the year with an 8-8 record.

Lehigh will take on Penn in the home opener at J. David Walker Field on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
