BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team fell to the Villanova Wildcats 5-2 at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center Saturday afternoon to the 2019 campaign.
Lehigh drops to 0-1 on the season while Villanova moves to 2-2 with the win.
"I saw so many great things today. Even with the loss, there's a lot to feel good about. I was particularly impressed by our doubles play at the one and two doubles seeds, and I thought Sibel played an outstanding singles match," said head coach Sarah Hendirx after the loss.
The Mountain Hawks started things off well in doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Although seeing the Wildcats win the third flight doubles 6-0, the Brown and White powered through and took the remaining two doubles matches, as sophomore Paula Gonzalez and junior Sibel Can took the No. 1 doubles flight 7-5 while sophomore Casey Zhong and freshman Elizabeth Nowak took the No. 2 doubles flight 6-3 to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Going down 2-1 after falling in the third and fourth singles matches, Can would defeat Althans of Villanova in three sets, winning the first set 6-2 and third set 6-1 while dropping the second set 2-6.
Two other Mountain Hawks would take their Villanova counterparts to three sets, as Zhong and Gonzalez both had chances to secure their first wins of the season.
It'll be a quick turnaround for the Mountain Hawks, as they host the Drexel Dragons Sunday at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
