Women's Tennis Begins Season With Busy Weekend - Villanova and Drexel Come To Town

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With a pair of games this weekend, the Lehigh women's tennis team looks to build upon its 11-10 season that saw the Mountain Hawks make the Patriot League semifinals where the Brown and White fell 3-4 to No. 1 seeded Navy.

With a short offseason for the Mountain Hawks, second-year head coach Sarah Hendrix has liked what she has seen from her squad leading up to the season opener against Villanova.

"The team has been committed to their offseason workouts and captains' practices, and the results have shown leading up to the beginning of our season," said Hendrix.

The Mountain Hawks were able to improve their craft this fall in a competitive fall tournament schedule, along with a select group competing in the ITA invitational tournament at Yale University. Those among the Brown and White that saw action at the ITA was junior Sibel Can and sophomore Paula Gonzalez whom both saw action in doubles and singles.

"Sibel and Paula both had great success in doubles in the fall, including winning the first flight doubles at Navy's tournament. That was a great tournament for the team as a whole, gaining experience against a league team, especially a team of Navy's caliber," said Hendrix.

Starting the season off with a bang, the Mountain Hawks start their season with a busy weekend, starting with Villanova on February 9 before turning their attention to Drexel on February 10. Lehigh will be home at the Lewis Tennis Center from now until March 3 before venturing down south to play a pair of competitive squads in the College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina.

"We'd love to be able to play all our matches outside, but with the weather in the northeast, it's hard to do that," said Hendrix. "However, we're fortunate to have our indoor center, practice at the same time every day and use our facility to train year-round. Being able to host matches, and having a home-court advantage early in the season can be a good thing to build off of."

Hendrix and the Mountain Hawks welcomed three new members to their squad as Sarah Hua, Elizabeth Nowak and Anshika Singh join the Brown and White this season.

"So far I've been impressed with how everyone's played in the offseason and the fall season. They've made great progress acclimating to the college game," said Hendrix.

Returning for Lehigh this season is Paula Gonzalez, who was named to the All-Patriot League Second team as a freshman last season. She'll be joined by fellow sophomores Catherine Meighan and Casey Zhong. The upperclassmen this season will be junior Leigh Friedman and Can along with the lone senior, Grace Lin.

The Mountain Hawks look to improve on their results from last season along with the improvements and strides made in the fall. Looking at this season, Lehigh gets going with a tough Villanova squad.

After Villanova, The Mountain Hawks see the Dragons of Drexel University come to Bethlehem on Sunday, February 10.
