Malloy leads charge, but Mountain Hawks fall to The Mount, 8-6

TOWSON, Md. — The Lehigh baseball team had chances to get the victory on Saturday afternoon the first game of a three-game set with Mount St. Mary's at Calvert Hall High School, but fell just short by a score of 8-6.
With junior Levi Stoudt on the mound, the Mountaineers got out to a quick 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning when Vaughn Parker II reached on a throwing error, scoring Miles Nicholson. In the second inning, everything changed for the Mountain Hawks when senior Ryan Malloy stepped up to bat. After Patriot League Rookie of the Week Casey Rother walked and advanced on a wild pitch, Malloy delivered with a two-run home run, his first of the season and sixth of his career to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Lehigh also found success in the top of the fourth inning when Rother singled to left field, extending his hitting streak to three games, the first three of his career. Junior Matt Hand reached on a Mt. St. Mary's fielding error, advancing Rother to second base. After back-to-back balks from Trey McGeough, Hand eventually advanced to third base allowing Rother to score and give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
Everything changed for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth inning as Mount St. Mary's scored seven runs off Stoudt to give The Mount a quick 8-3 lead. Stoudt's (0-2) final line after 3 1/3 innings included allowing six earned runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
"We struggled with our defensive execution early in the game and with making key pitches," said head coach Sean Leary. "The Mount took full advantage of that and built their lead."
In the top of the fifth, Lehigh received a little more life with senior Jeff Shanfeldt at the plate. Shanfeldt got his first hit of the season, a two-RBI double that scored Tony Gallo and Mike Maguire, pulling the Mountain Hawks within three runs, 8-5.
With senior Ethan Frohman in relief for the entirety of the game after Stoudt was removed, he allowed the Mountain Hawks to stay in contention for the win until the very end. Frohman had a very solid outing, throwing 4 2/3 innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one run with three strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks had some more life in the top of the eighth inning when sophomore Eric Cichocki hit a double to left field, scoring Malloy and cutting into The Mount's lead, 8-6.
"Our offense was able to fight back and that was mostly led by Malloy," said Leary. "However, we still need to produce some key hits later in the game."
Mount St. Mary's Michael Kuypers pitched the final four innings of the game for the save and gave the Mountaineers their first win of the season.
For Lehigh, the team had two-hit games from both freshman Gerard Sweeney (2-for-4) and Ryan Malloy (2-for-4). Mike Maguire walked despite not getting a hit, extending his on-base streak to three games. Tony Gallo failed to reach base for the first time in 14 games dating back to last season. After an 0-for-5 day, he also didn't register a base hit for the first time in five games dating back to the 2019 season.
"Our group knows this was not a great representation of executing our system," Leary said. "I'm very anxious for us to get back after it tomorrow."
Lehigh will get back to work tomorrow afternoon at McManus Field at Calvert Hall High School for the a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's at 1 and 4 p.m. RHP Jason Reynolds (0-1, 18.00 ERA) and RHP Matt Svanson (0-1, 8.31 ERA) are the probable starting pitchers for tomorrow's matchup.
