Lehigh scores 19 runs on 24 hits to sweep doubleheader at The Mount

TOWSON, Md. — It took a week, but Lehigh baseball finally got wins one and two on Sunday, sweeping the doubleheader 10-5, 9-4 at Calvert Hall High School against Mount St. Mary's and taking two-of-three from the Mountaineers. Offense was key for Lehigh on Sunday, as the production never stopped, leading to a positive outlook heading into the coming week.
To start off the first game of the doubleheader, the Mountain Hawks got going early and first, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the third inning and never really looked back. Senior Ryan Malloy took a single to left field and scored junior Tony Gallo to put Lehigh up, 1-0. Still in the third, junior Matt Hand doubled down the left field line and scored senior Jeff Shanfeldt to extend the lead to 2-0.
Still in the third, Tyler Schreiner finally was able to find contact with the ball with a two-RBI single that scored both Hand and Malloy and gave the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 lead.
After struggling to find his way at the plate on Saturday by going 0-for-5 and seeing his 14-game on-base streak come to an end, Gallo came right back and provided some power for the Mountain Hawks in the fourth inning, hitting his first home run of the season, the team's second of the season and of the weekend. The two-RBI homer found its way over the center field wall and scored Mike Maguire to make it a 6-0 Lehigh lead.
The fifth inning was much of the same for the Mountain Hawks, who were able to extend their lead to 8-0 in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a Mount St. Mary's fielding error that allowed Maguire to reach and both Schreiner and Hand to score. Two batters later, Gallo swatted another ball to the outfield, this time to left for an RBI-double that scored Thomas Schumacher and made it a 9-0 Lehigh lead. Maguire then scored on a passed ball and put the Mountain Hawks up by 10 in just the fifth inning.
With a 10-0 lead and the ability be comfortable up on the mound, junior right-hander Jason Reynolds found himself in a position that most pitchers don't see very often. After struggling to find his rhythm against Duke in the later innings last weekend, Reynolds (1-1) was locked in for most of Saturday. He threw seven very strong innings, allowing just three earned runs on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts on 84 pitches. The runs came in the bottom of the fifth, when the Mountaineers finally cracked the run column.
"Ace-level pitchers stop losing streaks and Jason did exactly what we needed him to do today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He just kept throwing zeroes, kept competing and bought us some outs. His stuff was spectacular today."
Jared Urban tripled down the right field line, scoring Owen Wosleger. Miles Nicholson had a triple himself for The Mount, which scored Wosleger and the Mountaineers came within eight runs, trailing 10-2. Nicholson then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 10-3 ballgame.
Mount St. Mary's got the last runs of the game with a Trevor Leamer double off Lehigh reliever Cameron Van Hoorebeke that scored Connor Buggy and Thomas Savastio.
Senior Cole McManimon came on for the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the final two outs which sealed the deal for Lehigh's first victory of the season by a score of 10-5.
For the game, Tony Gallo went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBIs along with a walk. Tyler Schreiner was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Ryan Malloy went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Though not being able to tally a hit, Mike Maguire did his job in the lead-off role, getting on base twice with two walks, scoring twice and getting an RBI.
Mount St. Mary's woes in the field contributed to two errors, which ultimately led to runs on the other side.
The way the Mountain Hawks' offense played in the first game of the doubleheader ultimately bled into the second game, especially on the front-end.
The top of the first inning started with a Mike Maguire walk and was followed by two more walks to Tony Gallo and Jeff Shanfeldt. Patriot League Rookie of the Week Casey Rother continued his torrid stretch, with a single to center field, scoring Maguire to put the Mountain Hawks up first, 1-0.
Ryan Malloy continued to heat up in the top of the fourth inning, when he singled in Shanfeldt to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead. A Cole Humes walk with the bases loaded padded the Mountain Hawks lead a little and made Game 2 starter Matt Svanson's life a little more comfortable on the mound. Despite allowing runs to come across in the fourth and fifth innings, Svanson was able to wheel and deal and only allow two earned runs on six hits in five innings, striking out five Mountaineers and walking just one.
For the second straight weekend, sophomore Peter Woltersdorf found himself in relief of Svanson and he really did throw another solid outing. The wind was a tough all game long, which ultimately led to a pop up that turned into a Mount St. Mary's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game up at four. Woltersdorf (1-0), who picked up the win in the end, pitched two innings, throwing 43 pitches and allowed just two earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
The conditions were really tough today, especially with the high cross-winds that carried the ball all over the place," said Leary. "However, our pitchers were outstanding despite the tough conditions. I was really impressed with the way all of our guys pitched today, especially our young guys."
The offense found its mojo once again in the top of the eighth, reeling off five runs on six hits to take a 9-4 lead. Malloy opened the inning with a double down the right field line. A Matt Hand bunt single scored Malloy on a throwing error. Eric Cichocki followed up the at-bat with a bunt single of his own, with Hand advancing over to third base. Hand then scored on a wild pitch. The Mountain Hawks scored three straight runs on three straight singles from Maguire, Gerard Sweeney and Gallo.
"I think we ended up playing small-ball very well today," Leary said. "It seems like the kids relaxed a little bit in there and get big hits when we need them. The guys work the system so well.
"We got some big hits today from Gallo and Malloy and so many others. I really liked the way our freshmen played in there, whether it was (Gerard) Sweeney or (Cole) Humes or (Casey) Rother."
For freshman reliever Luke Rettig, there really couldn't have been a better ending for the pitcher, who came on in relief of Woltersdorf for the final two innings. He threw two no-hit innings with four strikeouts on 26 pitches.
For the weekend, Ryan Malloy hit .500 (7-for-14) with five runs, four RBIs, a home run and a double. He went 2-for-5 in the first game and 3-for-5 in the second game. On the season so far, Malloy is hitting .400 with a 1.100 OPS and leads the team in hits (8) and RBIs (5), as well as total bases (14).
Rother has been fantastic for the Mountain Hawks to open up his young career, currently riding a five-game hitting streak, where he is currently hitting .350 with seven hits, two RBIs and a .731 OPS.
The home run for Gallo was the first of his career and he is hitting .304 with seven hits and four RBIs so far.
After a rough go last weekend at Duke, the offense has finally found its life after the last four games on the road, scoring 28 runs with 39 hits during that stretch.
The Mountain Hawks head back on the road to pretty much the same location, this time taking on Towson for a three-game series Mar. 1-3.
