BETHLEHEM, PA. – Facing its toughest competition of the season, the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team will make the travel to Piscataway, New Jersey for the next four days. The Mountain Hawks will be one of six teams competing in the Rutgers Invitational. Joining the Brown and White will be UCONN, Colgate, Columbia, American and Illinois. The Fighting Illini will only compete in diving.
Last time out, Lehigh continued its hot start to the season with a dominating victory over the Leopards of Lafayette. The 218-78 Mountain Hawk victory was the 12th straight time that Lehigh defeated its rival. The Brown and White won 14-of-16 events, including three total wins from Payton Miles and Sarah Hardy. Liz Olszewski, Anna Francisco, Ann Foley and Tori Connolly each piled on two total wins as well. At the conclusion of the meet against Lafayette, the Mountain Hawks broke seven records.
Going into this week, Lehigh's 6-0 record is the best start to a season since the 1998-99 season, a season in which the Brown and White started 7-0 and finished 9-2 on the season, finishing second in the Patriot League. There's still a long way to go in the season, however the Mountain Hawks are ready to continue their journey.
Throughout the first part of its season, Lehigh has managed to win close meets, as well as having the capability and talent to blow teams out of the water. The lone close match of the season came against West Chester, as the Mountain Hawks edged the Golden Rams, 137-103. Against Boston, Bloomsburg, Rider, Loyola and Lafayette, Lehigh has managed to use its talent, depth and leadership to race by teams with a comfortable margin.
Despite the early season success, head coach Rob Herb is pushing his team, striving to be better than their previous performance. "We have the talent to be the best team in the Patriot League," stated Herb. "This meet at Rutgers will definitely help our athletes racing and elevating times. This will be a big help in preparation for Patriot's."
Teams will begin competing on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. from the Rutgers Aquatics Center. The 800 yard free relay (timed finals) will be the only event held. Lehigh will not be competing on Wednesday, as they will compete in the majority of the action will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Check back Thursday night to see how the Mountain Hawks fared in their first day of action in Piscataway.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will rest up for a month and return to action at Army West Point in a Patriot League showdown on January 10.
