BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team continues its fall schedule on Saturday when it hosts Class Day on the Lehigh River in Allentown, Pa. It's a big day for the program, as the morning kicks off with the christening of new racing shells.
"Class Day is where each class is responsible for the selection, training, and strategizing of their crew to be the best class on the day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The crews are mixed with men and women, and reinforces we are one team at Lehigh rowing."
Heats will begin at approximately 10 a.m. with finals immediately after. The heats will feature the first-years vs. the sophomores, and the juniors against the seniors.
"Winners of the heats will face any alumni/ae crews we have show up," said Conley. "Alumni/ae crews automatically make the final as they have put in their four years, which adds a little spice to the competition."
The present-day Mountain Hawks have one fall race under their belts so far, competing at Navy Day two weekends ago. The day saw mixed results, with one of the highlights being the Women's Freshmen Eight finishing third in its race.
Since that regatta, Lehigh has been hard at work looking to improve.
"We have really worked on executing while under pressure," said Conley. "I believe the team has raised their game in practice and I'm excited to see how they race Saturday."
Saturday is a unique race day for the program. As a program, it's about competition against each other, but also camaraderie at the same time.
"Saturday is about connection," said Conley. "Each class needs to connect their blades to the water with as much power as we possibly can to win the day. Saturday is also about connecting names in the boathouse with the people that make our successes possible."
That connection will come with the christening before racing, at approximately 9 a.m.
"We will be christening four boats in honor of Laura Parks '18 (made possible from donations from Melinda Andrade), Cameron Copeland '09, Joe Loguidice '09, and Jack Muskett '09," said Conley.
"The christening of our new racing shells is a great opportunity for members of our community to be recognized for their tremendous support to the program. It's an opportunity for our team to see and appreciate that what they work to accomplish would not be possible without the support of others, and those that came before them. These opportunities are important for our past, present and future teams. We need to connect our current team to its past and our current team needs to know that they're needed for continued growth and success of the program."
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks have one final fall race remaining, at the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, Nov. 9.
