Juniors come out victorious in successful Class Day

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team held Class Day on Saturday morning at the Boathouse in Allentown and at the end of racing, it was the junior class that came out victorious. It was a big day for the program as before the races, four new boats (shells) were christened in honor of alumni(ae) donors.

"Today as a whole was about connecting everything together," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "You're connecting the past with the present with the future. Our team does really well with that, but we've got to keep fostering that idea. We're only here because of our past and we can only get better because of what our current team can do for the future."

Not long after alums Laura Parks '18 (made possible by donations from Melinda Andrade), Cameron Copeland '09, Joe Loguidice '09 and Jack Muskett '10 were recognized, the juniors picked up a victory over the seniors in the heat before topping the freshmen in the grand final. Racing distance was shortened, allowing the finals to happen almost immediately after the initial heats.

"There was a lot of fierce competition between the juniors and seniors in the heat and the juniors were able to pull it out, which was great," said Conley. "Then in the final, they put it all out there and were clearly the winners. Congratulations to that class."

Class Day was the culmination of a week that saw each class take ownership of their training to prepare for Saturday.

"This week was huge in a lot of different ways," said Conley. "It creates a little bit more fun with the team, but more importantly, it takes the aspect of coaching and puts that more on the athletes for this week to understand what goes into making our program successful."

The Mountain Hawks now look ahead to their fall finale when they compete at the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, Nov. 9 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J."

"With the Frostbite, we're going to be shortening the racing down to 2,000 meters," said Conley. "That just simply means we'll need to start doing a little bit more high intensity pieces, a little bit shorter than what we've been doing just so we're ready for it. I think with this group, they're ready to make that transition."
