Lehigh Sweeps Lafayette to Extend Long-Running Win Streak Over Rival

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Due to poor weather conditions, the Mountain Hawks got an extra home match as their annual showdown against rival Lafayette was moved from Easton to Lewis Tennis Center on Monday. Lehigh did not disappoint the home crowd as the Mountain Hawks soared to a 7-0 victory over the Leopards.
Lehigh improves to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette falls to 8-10 overall and 1-5 in the league. Lehigh also extends its long-running win streak to 17-straight seasons over Lafayette dating back to 2002.
Lehigh began the match by clinching the doubles point with victories at the first and second flights. Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez got things started as they cruised to a 6-0 victory at the second flight. They now improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. Christina Auyeung and Casey Zhong clinched the team point with a 6-1 victory at the first flight. LU's top pairing is now 9-7 overall this season with a mark of 2-2 in the league.
Lehigh rolled through the singles matches, scoring straight-set victories at each flight.
Auyeung reached win No. 10 on the season with her victory at the first flight and has now reached double-digit wins for the fourth time in her career. She is now 10-6 overall this season and 2-2 in league play.
Briana Maravich also reached the 10-win mark on the season with her victory at the fifth flight and has totaled double-digit wins three times in her career. Maravich is currently riding a four-match win streak as she improves to 10-6 overall on the season and is 4-0 in league play.
Freshman Catherine Meighan recorded her first-career victory as she scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Katie Hall at the sixth flight. She is now 1-1 on the season with a league record of 1-0.
Gonzalez and Can both inched closer to reaching 10 wins as they both recorded their ninth victories of the season. Both Gonzalez and Can are now 9-7 overall with a mark of 3-1 in the league.
Zhong evened up her record with her victory in her first match at the fourth flight. She is now 8-8 overall this season and 3-1 in league play.
Lehigh has three more matches scheduled for the week, beginning with a match at Bucknell on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks travel to West Point, N.Y. where they will face Army on Friday and Boston U on Saturday to close out the regular season.
