Forkner Clinches 4-3 Quarterfinal win over Bucknell

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Fourth-seeded Lehigh women's tennis punched its ticket to the Patriot League semifinals for the second straight year with a dramatic 4–3 victory over fifth-seeded Bucknell in Friday's quarterfinal matchup. The Mountain Hawks will now face top-seeded Army on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
Sophomore Maggie Forkner clinched the match in thrilling fashion at the No. 1 singles spot. After dropping the first set to Whitney King 6-1, Forkner bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second. Trailing 5-2 in the third set, she mounted a remarkable comeback, winning five straight games to seal the victory for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks had to rally after dropping the doubles point early. Although Forkner and Hannah Letzer won their match 6-4, the other two pairs fell short: Alina Shyani and Ronit Khromchenko lost 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, while Hamsa Javagal and Audrey Harrington were edged 7-5 at No. 3.
Javagal jump-started singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2. First-year Alina Shyani then gave Lehigh its first lead of the day with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Bucknell pulled even after Khromchenko lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6, but sophomore Giselle Vlassis delivered a crucial point at No. 4 with back-to-back 7-5 wins.
The Bison tied the match again after Allyce Gaborik dropped a tight three-set battle at No. 5 singles, winning the first set 6-2 before falling 6-2, 6-4. That set the stage for Forkner's clutch performance to lift Lehigh into the semis.
