EASTON, Pa. – For the sixth time in the last eight meetings, the Lehigh women's track and field team took down Lafayette by a final of 128-75 in the school's annual dual meet on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Brittany Curtin broke the school record in the discus at 47.88 meters, besting the previous benchmark of 45.40m, which had been held by Rebecca Duhamel since 2012. Junior Kaitlyn Toman reset her own school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.85 meters to surpass her previous outdoor high mark of 3.70 meters. Curtin, who also won the shot put and took second in the hammer throw, was named Lehigh's Field Athlete of the Meet and junior Noreen Byrne was named the team's Track Athlete of the Meet after she won both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles.
All told, Lehigh won 16 out of the meet's 19 events including all eight field events, swept the top three spots in five events, and earned the maximum number of team points in 12 events, including relays.
Curtin's two wins led a strong day for Lehigh's throwers, where the Brown and White won all four events. Curtin's winning shot put of 13.61m was also an ECAC qualifier and personal record. Senior Amanda Youngblood took runner-up behind her in both the discus (40.09m) and shot put (12.26m).
Senior Paige Grossman (50.10m) took first place in the hammer throw with Curtin (48.82m) finishing runner-up. Hannah Patrick hit an ECAC qualifying mark of 41.53m to win the javelin with Brianna Wanbaugh hitting a PR and finishing second (40.84m).
Toman's vault cleared a full 15 centimeters above her previous school outdoor record. She led a sweep of the podium for Lehigh with Madisyn Hawkins (3.55m) and Caity Reverand 3.40m following in second and third. Toman also holds the school's indoor record of 3.95m, which she set at February's Patriot League Championships.
"Brittany is proving to be a great asset to our program," said head coach Matt Utesch. "I just hope that she can stay focused and keep that team-first mentality as she has success individually. It's great that (Toman) broke a school record on the same day because that is the type of person that she is and is a great example for Brittany to follow. She's very team-first and humble about what she's doing, and also gets very excited when the rest of the team does well. (Toman) has done a great job leading the vaulters and I would hope that Brittany can be the same kind of person for our throwers."
Junior Tyler Bannister led the way in the high jump with a leap that cleared 1.65 meters. Teammate Jordan Otto picked up team points for Lehigh in third (1.60m). Freshman Brett DeWeese took the long jump title for the second straight meet at 5.33m, with Cate Shippee finishing in third. Shippee followed that performance with a win of her own in the triple jump at 10.94m, breaking her previous PR by 14 centimeters. Alexis Wintle took third place after PR-ing herself at 10.14m.
On the track, Byrne paced Lehigh with her two victories in the hurdles, crossing the line in 15.27 in the
100H and 1:04.84 in the 400H. LU swept the top three spots in both events with DeWeese (15.37) scoring in second place in the 100H and Erin Racano (1:05.47) taking runner-up in the 400H.
In the sprints, freshman Morgan McConnell took home the gold in the 200m (25.90), while Liyala Dickens finished second in the 100m dash (13.03) and Alexis Smith (59.98) took second in the 400m.
Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 800m run with Brooke Schaeffer breaking the tape in 2:20.94 and Mary Casey (2:22.55) following close behind.
Hannah Bonaguidi (4:56.32) took runner-up in the 1500m, and sophomore Ashleigh Crawford posted a huge PR to win the 5,000m run in 17:36.60, besting her previous PR from last season by just under 53 seconds.
Maura Henderson (11.19.65) and Miranda Royds (11:21.19) finished one-two in the 3000m steeplechase. Lehigh's women also swept the two relays with DeWeese, Iman Mosley, McConnell and Dickens taking the 4x100m in 49.80 seconds, and Schaeffer, Kristen Lavallee, Hanna Brosky and Rachel Okun winning the 4x400m in 4:09.44.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will have representatives at a pair of meets next weekend including the Coach P. Invitational at Moravian on Friday-Saturday, April 13-14, and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
