CAMDEN, N.J. – The Lehigh women's rowing team wrapped up its pre-Patriot League Championships schedule on Saturday by competing in the Cherry Hill Invitational on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Three Mountain Hawks' boats took to the river, led by the Second Varsity Eight, which advanced to the grand final and defeated Patriot League rival Bucknell in the process. The Varsity Four also won the petite final.
Â
"I think today showed us that we can finally compete for a medal at Patriots, which we haven't done in an incredibly long time. But at the same time, we walked away with a couple frustrations in terms of how we executed our races, which will only feed our motivation over the next couple weeks," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley.
Â
The Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:07.41 in its heat to advance to the grand final. The Mountain Hawks finished ahead of Patriot League foe Holy Cross (7:45.14) while also posting better teams than two other league opponents in heat number one – Georgetown (7:22.56) and MIT (7:43.09). Lehigh then finished in fifth in the grand final with a time of 7:05.35, ahead of yet another Patriot League opponent Bucknell (7:07.47)
Â
"The 2V was able to beat Bucknell for the first time this year and was able to make the grand final, which against that level of competition, is really difficult," said Conley. "It was awesome to see them stand out that way."
Â
The Varsity Eight came in fifth in its morning heat (6:56.96) and fourth in the ensuing petite final (6:57.90) while the Varsity Four finished third in its heat (8:24.36) before coming in first in the petite final (8:19.70). The Varsity Four finished ahead of Patriot League opponent Georgetown in both races.
Â
Lehigh women's rowing will now look ahead to the Patriot League Championships, set for Friday, May 11, also on the Cooper River. Lehigh's men's squad returns to action at Temple next Saturday (Apr. 28).
Â
"Going into Patriots, we know we have a little bit more speed to find," said Conley. "With such a young group of athletes, these next couple weeks are going to be critical."
